The structure of modern society has changed due to developments in the media and technology, and leisure time has increased. Along with the change, people’s main interests have moved from survival to leisure and quality of life. These changes signify that modern society is entering a period in which, as community activities expand, play experiences in various areas become important and the value of pluralistic life is respected. Today, these play experiences are expanding in various ways, and the concept of play can be discovered in the space called art museums. In the 1990s as digital technology came into art museum exhibitions, exhibition methods changed, and as new interactions formed between museum audience and the art works, existing concepts of exhibition also changed. Through the implementation of technology, the concept of art museums have recently evolved beyond being a passive place of collecting, preserving, and exhibiting works of art into being a place of play experience, a space in which active participation of audience appreciating art works, art and life, play and rest, and education are all joined together. Furthermore, art museums have meaning as a place of communication for culture and art, and they reflect their surrounding environmental factors in such way as to enable the audience to experience art directly or indirectly and to become an open space to the general public, a place of enjoyment and comfort. This paper considered what significance the expansion of art museum functions brought to art museums and, by studying specific cases of museums in and out of Korea, examined how audiences experience play within the space called art museum. Today, art museums are expanding into an integrated play space which can promote intellectual activities and creative communication through the process of active participation and self enjoyment. However, the play experience factors that appear in art museums must target not only children but all constituents of society. Various exhibition methods and programs are also required to enable people to experience life’s pleasures and leisure through art and culture. They will endow pleasure and entertainment in all activities and, by making it possible to encounter art and culture in any space, they will contribute to play becoming the driving force for human culture and to making human life more abundant.
