Brain-computer interface (BCI) is a type of the quantitative analyses of brainwaves, which can control devices like a computer, a wheelchair, or nerve prostheses, using the brain's electromagnetic bio signals. BCI extracts electrical signals by measuring a human?s will?that is, brain activities, and interprets and converts this in the signal processing phase to give control orders. For the successful execution of such a process, BCI cannot be confined to only a certain field of study; rather, it requires integrated knowledge of not only neuroscience but also engineering technologies as well as other related studies. Furthermore, ethical evaluations should be performed before practical technologies of BCI are to be commercialized. Neuroethics, of which emergence is inevitable considering this background, is still in its infancy, but is expanding its research network centered on advanced countries in North America, Europe, and Japan. From the social aspect, the importance of and the interest in the education and study of neuroethetics are becoming higher. Neuroethics can be defined as a study of analyzing the effect of neuro-engineering technologies on the life of the human being, and in the BCI field, one of the most active fields in neuroethics, various studies are being conducted related to the neuroethical issues. The focus of recent BCI studies has been not only on rehabilitation for overcoming damages in the neurological system, but also on the attempts in the BCI field of connecting new scientific frontiers, such as multimedia communication or virtual reality, and current studies are on the verge of commercializing such a convergence in the near future. For the commercialization of BCI, the two major issues in neuroethics should be faced: safety and efficiency, and another important issues that cannot be avoided are the protection of private information, such as patient information and test results, and the equality in technology distribution. This study introduces the studies in neuroethics, surveys the current BCI studies, categorizes various neuroethical issues in the clinical field that should be examined before the commercialization of BCI into legal, social, ethical, and philosophical issues. Later, the study analyzes these issues based on related cases, and proposes an improvement plan that can be executed in the future, so as to reduce the problems and errors that can occur during the implementation of BCI technology.
