Berg Balance Scale(BBS), Timed Up & Go Test(TUG), 안정보행속도, Fugl-Meyer Assessment(FMA), Postural Assessment Scale for Stroke Patient(PASS)를 평가하였다.

Objectives: Cerebral vascular accident (CVA, also known as stoke) causes secondary complications such as impeded movement, sensory disorder, and defects in speech and cognition. Reduced muscle power, altered muscle function, and impaired control of balance can introduce gait abnormalities that further reduce the quality of life of a stroke victim. Recovery of balance and gait ability is an important part of rehabilitation, which minimizes the risk of falls and helps in attaining a maximal restoration of pre-stroke daily life. The study investigated the effects of balance training with proprioceptive sensory and visual input on gait and functional activity in stroke patients.
Methods: Forty-seven subjects with a hemiplegic disability were distributed into three groups: task-oriented balance training (n=15), visual feedback using a Tetrax?? posturographic balance assessment and biofeedback device(n=15) and control(n=17). The 8-week program was from December 2008∼April 2009. All individuals also underwent neuromuscular developmental therapy. Assessment tools of balance and functional activity were lower extremity strength(Morticity Index), Berg Balance Scale(BBS), Timed Up & Go Test (TUG), self-selective comfortable gait speed, Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA), and Postural Assessment Scale for Stroke Patient(PASS). Variance was analyzed using one-way ANOVA to detect inter-group differences.
Results: All groups demonstrated significant improvement following 8 weeks of each intervention. In comparing inter-group differences, Morticity Index, FMA, and BBS were significantly different between the control group and the task-oriented balance training group (p<.05). TUG (p<.05), and self-selective comfortable gait speed (p<.001) were also significantly different between the control, task-oriented balance training, and visual feedback groups. However, no differences were evident among three groups in PASS.
Conclusion: Task-oriented balance training is more effective in improving post-stroke gait and functional ability. A variety of balance training programs that can be done easily and economically following hospital discharge should be developed for patients with post-stroke disabilities.
