Objectives : This study estimated the burden of disease due to PM10 of outdoor air pollutants using DALY, a composite indicator developed by the Global Burden of Disease Study Group.
Methods : We collected data from the national death certificate database, the abridged life table, the national health insurance claims database and PM10 exposure assessments from the National Institute of Environmental Research. As the method of the study, firstly, population exposure and population attributable fractions(PAFs) were computed using formulae, including the relative risk(RR) and prevalence of exposure(Pe). Secondly, the DALYs of PM10 concentration-related diseases were estimated. Lastly, the attributable burdens of diseases due to PM10 were concluded as being the sum of the products that multiplied the DALYs of PM10 concentration-related diseases by their population attributable fractions(PAFs).
Results : The burden of PM10 concentration in Korea was 6.9 DALY per 1,000 persons. PM10 concentration-related diseases were lung cancer(2.68), COPD(2.41), ischemic heart disease(0.62), pneumonia(0.61), asthma(0.55), preterm(0.03).
Conclusion : Despite the limitations that this data sources in order to examine connections between related disease and risk factor, used foreign thesis not domestic materials, in determining PAF in this study chose the method that was not systematic review and the limitation of the national death certificate database on its own, we suggest that this study's results can provide necessity of air pollution management system and a rational basis to plan a national health policy regarding the burden of disease caused by PM10 of outdoor air pollutants. Also, we expect to contribute the methodological development of burden of disease in Korea.
Key words : outdoor air pollution, PM10, burden of disease.
