A Study of Whanki Kim's Paintings : Centering on the Changes toward the Abstract Pointillism of the New York Period(1963~1974)원문보기

Whanki Kim, who experimented on diverse forms of art such as Cubism, Surrealism and pure Abstraction during his study in Tokyo in the 1930s, created a highly stylized form of painting after Korea’s Independence in the mid 1940s, adopting specific forms of objects into the picture plane. His art world did not show big change during his stay in Paris between 1956 and 1959, but after he moved to New York in 1963, he completed the style of Abstract Pointillism; pure Abstraction, which is visually distinct from his work prior to the 1970s, after actively investigating on forms. Although numerous research have been made about the art world of Whanki Kim, his 6 years’ work from 1963 ― right after he moved to new York ― to 1970 ― when Abstract Pointillism was introduced to Korea through the 1st ‘Hankook Daily News Contest’ ― have been relatively less explored. This seems to result from the fact that during this period complex features such as diverse forms have been explored simultaneously, disappeared and reappeared again as well as various materials such as oil on canvas, gouache, oil on newspaper have been heavily dealt with, which makes it difficult to understand the period chronologically. Many researches regard the New York Period as a ‘rupture’ with the Seoul Period, or allude to the ‘rupture’ by seldom or never commenting on this period. Even if researches deal with this period as much as other periods, each forms are only related to how the New York art world influenced Kim’s formal experiment, and fails to expand the research to how these forms appear in his past work, how these individual forms relate to each other, and how these experiments influenced Kim’s completion of Abstract Pointillism. Based on these points, this research analyzes diverse forms of Kim’s work which appear from the period when he moved to New York until the early 1970s, and examines how Kim’s Abstract Pointillism in the New York Period was completed which is distinctive from his early work, as well as exploring what the connection with his past work is and how Kim shifted, ultimately illuminating Kim’s whole body of work in various aspects. Kim’s art world is therefore divided into the ‘Pre-New York Period’ and the ‘New York Period’. The Pre-New York Period is again divided into ‘Reception of Abstraction’ and ‘Stylization of Traditional Beauty’ based on Korea’s independence in 1945, and has been explored chronologically. The New York Period is divided into the period of ‘Exploration of the General Form Language’ ― from 1963 to 1970 ― and the period of ‘Completion of Abstract Pointillism’, which is post 1970, yet in this period this research first examines the motive for Kim’s active exploration of form through the individual and social situation Kim was in by introducing the New York Period and then seeks the process of ‘Exploration of the General Form Language’ in chronological order. Then the ‘Exploration of the General Form Language’ chapter is divided into ‘Continuation of the Stylization of Traditional Beauty’, ‘Simplification of shape’. ‘Disintegration of Shape’, ‘Composition with the Plane’, ‘Composition with the Line’, ‘Composition with the Point’; the ‘Composition with the Plane’ section is again subdivided into ‘Horizontal Composition’, ‘Composition of Four Sides’, ‘Form Closing in from the Outside’ and ‘Cross Composition’, intensely examining forms that appear in the ‘Exploration of the General Form Language’ period. As a result, forms which appeared in the ‘Exploration of the General Form Language’ period could be understood as the extension of Kim’s will towards composition which already started in Seoul. Also, the fact that Abstract Pointillism of post 1970 did not appear suddenly by separating with the past, but was a result of extensive exploration could be verified. Kim’s goal was to express ‘nature’, a beautiful world, with an impressive manner rather than present a certain theory through art, therefore exerted for ‘all forms that could be found’ through his insides and outsides in order to find the most appropriate method; this effort resulted as diverse forms in the ‘Exploration of the General Form Language’ period and hence completed his Abstract Pointillism. Abstract Pointillism which was the mainstream of Kim’s art world after the 1970s share common factors with Abstract Expressionism and Minimal art in the United States, yet Kim never focused on flatness or non-individuality but revealed his admiration toward nature in the picture plane; therefore his work hold a double-sided aspect as his work completely overcomes the formal similarity where his work show the very similarity. Moreover, Kim’s Abstract Pointillism expresses endless images of nature by using the most basic unit of form, the point, which makes it possible for viewers with different cultural backgrounds feel deep impressions, which is different from his work made in Seoul. The completion of Abstract Pointillism was the completion of the General Form Language which Kim sought extensively.
