Adequate postural control depends on the spatial and temporal integration of vestibular, visual, and somatosensory information about the motion of the head and body. Postural control was affected by alterations in both the sensory and motor systems, including the basal ganglia and the cerebellum, and also the preceptual systems that interpret and transform the incoming sensory information. Diminished balance ability was multifactorial. It could be due to degeneration of visual and vestibular systems, degeneration of proprioception or impairment of central processing or a combination of these factors. The increased incidence of falls in the older population suggested that one or more of these components degenerate with age. Diminished visual, vestibular, and somatosensory function and slowing of sensorimotor processing all occurred with normal aging. Older people were also at higher risk for many diseases affecting the peripheral and central nervous systems. To prevent falls, balance training was very important for the elderly. There were other applications for this technology. With increased traffic came increases in traffic related accidents and injuries. These injuries could also affect or impair balance. The rehabilitation of balance ability was also very important for patient. This study described a new training system based on an unstable platform and a visual interactive system, that was designed to improve postural control ability. To confirm the effects of the training system, the accuracy validation experiment and the test-retest experiment were conducted. To investigate the muscle activities in the lower limbs for the different movement patterns on the unstable platform, the experimental studied on the muscle activities in the lower limbs for the different movement patterns were performed. The electromyographies (EMG) of the muscles in the lower limbs were recorded and analyzed in the time and the frequency domain. Our experimental results showed the significant differences in muscle activities for the different movement patterns. The experimental results suggested that, through the choice of different movement pattern, the training for lower extremity strength could be performed on specific muscles in different intensity. And, the ability of postural control could be improved by the training for lower extremity strength. To assess the training effects using a training system based on an unstable platform and a visual interactive system for improving the ability of postural control, fifteen elderly volunteers took part in a series of balance training using this system. An additional fifteen elderly volunteers which were employed as the control group, were also tested for comparison with the training group. To evaluate the effects of the training, the relevant parameters, such as the time of timed up and go test, the transfer limits of the different directions, the sway path of center of pressure, and the root mean square of center of pressure in antero-posterior direction and medio-lateral direction, concentric isokinetic strength of ankle and knee joints pre-training and post-training were measured. The results indicated that the training system could successfully assess the gradual improvement of the postural control capability of the volunteers and showed promise in terms of improving balance capability of the volunteers. The significant improvement in the postural capability of the elderly subjects suggested that elderly subjects could benefit more from the training using the system for the improvement of the ability of postural control.
