(The) effects of trauma-related negative cognitions and difficulties in emotion regulation on posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms in trumatic-exposed university students원문보기

Contemporary cognitive models emphasize the importance of trauma-related negative cognitions in posttraumatic disorder symptoms(PTSD), and recent research has demonstrated that difficulties in emotion regulation may also play a role. This current study examined the unique effects of trauma-related negative cognitions and difficulties in emotion regulation on PTSD symptoms. Trauma-related negative cognitions consist of negative beliefs about the self, negative beliefs about the world, and self-blame. Difficulties in emotionregulation comprise poor impulse control, lack of attention to and awareness of emotions, nonacceptance of emotions, lack of emotional clarity, limited access to emotional regulation strategies, and difficulties in engaging in goal-directed behavior. The Korean version of the Posttraumatic Diagnostic Scale, the Posttraumatic Cognitions Inventory, the Difficulties in Emotional Regulation Scale, and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21-item version were administered to 684 university students. Of these, 212 students who met the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders diagnostic criteria for traumatic experience were included in this study. The results showed that trauma-related negative cognition significantly predicted PTSD symptoms after controlling for gender, depression symptoms, anxiety symptoms, stress symptoms, and difficulties in emotion regulation. Difficulties in emotion regulation also significantly predicted PTSD symptoms when the effects of gender, depression symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and stress symptoms were controlled, whereas there was no significant unique effect after controlling for trauma-related negative cognitions further. Moreover, the relative contributions of the dimensions of trauma-related negative cognitions and difficulties in emotion regulation, respectively, were examined. Of the three dimensions of trauma-related negative cognitions, negative beliefs about the self and negative beliefs about the world each significantly contributed to PTSD symptoms. In contrast, none of the six dimensions of difficulties in emotional regulation independently predicted PTSD symptoms. These results provide particular support for therapeutic intervention aimed at modifying trauma-related negative cognitions, especially negative cognition about the self and the world, to alleviate PTSD symptoms of trauma-exposed university students and to prevent PTSD. Finally, implications of the results as well as several limitations of this study and suggestions for future study were discussed.
