Paintings and calligraphic works made of organic materials such as papers or silks can be severely damaged by insects and germs. Therefore, in order to avoid such damages, currently fumigation is carried out as one of methods to kill the insects and germs, using ethylene oxide and Methyl bromide mixtures in a sealed environment. However, Methyl bromide is regulated as a hazardous substance and only allowed to be used for medical inspections in the developed countries since 2005 because it is a toxic substance and also one of pollutants to destruct a ozone layer. In the case of Korea, Methyl bromide will be entirely prohibited to use from 2015 and so the development of the substitute is urgently needed now. Therefore, insecticide, germicide or repellents to apply for cultural heritages have been developed and commercial repellents currently tend to increase their natural component parts. Traditionally, natural medicine stuff had been used to keep the paints and calligraphic works in safe from the insects and germs. This paper will review the fact of the traditional natural medicine stuff usage through old documents and confirmed the remaining medicine stuff. In addition, the natural medicine stuff has been reproduced based on the old documents and remaining stuff, and then tested to see whether they have the effects of biocide (repellents). The medicine stuff to care for books has been figured from 'Eui-guei', which tells about ceremonies, rules and examples for the Dynasty, related to 'Sil-rok' (authentic records), and the medicine stuff for paintings has been figured from another 'Eui-guei' related to 'Eo-jin; (portraits of kings). However, the ‘Eui-guei' of the records may only be limited to a Royal-family, and in the ’Eui-guei' of the portraits, only 'Eui-hyang' and 'Bu-young-hyang' (such like incenses or aroma) are just recorded to identify the stuff instead of using the specific name for each medicine stuff. Thus medical books such as 'Dong-eui-bo-gam' and 'Je-jung-sin-pyeon', at the time, are referred to in order to figure out which the medicine stuff are specifically meant to be. Also 'San-rim-gyeong-jei' and 'Gyu-hap-chong-seo' are referred to for the diversity of classes. Through the above books and documents, the types and quantity of the exact medicine stuff to be used to store paints and calligraphic works and even instructions/directions can be known. The records that show such applications of the medicines stuff usage go on for over 300 years and it proves that the traditional natural medicine stuff are indeed effective on repellents. Also, through the remaining medicine stuff in the storage box for the paintings and calligraphic works, some stuff have been identified and almost match with the types and proportions of the remaining medicine stuff after comparing the stuff with the records. Therefore, based on the objective and specific database, the medicine stuff have been restored accordingly and tested for the effects of repellents. After the tests, compared to the current method of the extraction from some of natural medicine stuff using alcohol or other types of solvents for the commercialization of the medicine stuff, it is proved that using the natural medicine stuff themselves is more effective and efficient. In addition, the medicine stuff are used for repellents rather than for insecticide or germicide, and have better properties as insect and germ repellents. Therefore, it is proved that the conservation method of the painting and calligraphic works using the natural medicine suff is still effective through the scientific tests, and the possibility of the natural medicine stuff application can be introduced concerning the protection of the environment. As seen from the documents and tests, the natural medicine stuff replacing chemicals can be broadly applied to the conservation of the organic materials.
