Metamorphosis is one of human desires to go beyond a limited world and lead a life at one's pleasure. The desire for metamorphosis makes reality more fantastic and make people see things and a world they dream of in a new light. They make up stories to express their doubt about existence, to present their possible answers to the doubt and to unveil their aspiration, and metamorphosis motif is the very mirror of such a collectivistic human desire. The purpose of this study was to examine the aspects and meaning of metamorphosis motif in Korean traditional fairy tales on the assumption that metamorphosis motif might be the best thing to represent reality and actualize human desires. And it's also meant to discuss the educational significance of world view and metamorphosis motif in fairy tales that employed metamorphosis motif to solve the given problems and get rid of conflicts in a surrealistic and fantastic way. Chapter II described the concept of metamorphosis motif and calculated the number of cases that metamorphosis of gods, humans and natural things(animals, plans and inanimate objects) might take place in literary works. And then the number of cases that metamorphosis of gods, humans and natural things might occur respectively in terms of quality and form was investigated. Given the characteristics of traditional fairy tales, metamorphosis was defined as what underwent a change in form and utilized surrealistic and mystic methods to do that. The number of cases that metamorphosis might take place was checked by selecting gods, humans and natural things(animals, plants and inanimated objects) as what might transform into another things. As a result, there appeared nine different aspects of metamorphosis, which were subclassified into 21 according to whether to change in form or quality. Out of the 21 aspects of metamorphosis, 15 were selected as what might occur in literary works. Chapter III categorized the 15 metamorphosis cases into nine that gods, humans and natural things might turn into one another, and 27 traditional fairy tales that showed apparent examples of the metamorphosis among gods, humans and natural things were selected to shed light on the aspects and meaning of metamorphosis motif. Chapter Ⅳ looked into the world view described by the metamorphosis motif based on the previous chapter. And it's found that the world view of the fairy tales were characterized by needs for immortality of spirits and circulation of life, by a strong will to transcend and go beyond the given boundary situations through a rite of passage, by pursuit of human-oriented life and by confidence in the absoluteness of the good that means that the good and the wicked are respectively rewarded and punished. Chapter V explored the educational significance of metamorphosis motif in the traditional fairy tales. The first meaning of it was that the motif could stimulate children's elastic imagination through surrealistic and fantastic incidents, and the second meaning was that it enables readers to learn wisdom about how to get over a crisis due to its characteristics that the characters must go through a rite of passage to turn into another things. The third meaning was that children are naturally able to pursue moral values by learning a lesson that the good are rewarded and the wicked are punished. The fourth meaning was that it's proven that humans are able to enlarge their abilities through natural things. This study attempted to describe the concept of metamorphosis motif in traditional fairy tales whose themes were about metamorphosis and to check the number of cases that metamorphosis might take place in traditional fairy tales. This study is meaningful in that it tried to discuss how human desire for transformation was represented in traditional fairy tales and what meaning metamorphosis motif imposed on the narratives. Looking into the diverse implications of metamorphosis motif is expected to contribute to taking an open view of nature and humans and broadening the way of looking at traditional fairy tales, and future research efforts should be channeled into making an inquiry into the aspects of both of external and internal metamorphosis motif and the meaning of the motif.
