ABSTRACT A Study on James I. Packer's Praying Kim, Kyung-Beom Derpartment of Theology, Graduate School of Christian Studies Soongsil University Supervised by Professor Kim, Yung-Han This is the thesis about the study on James I. Packer's Praying. It consists of the studies of his book Praying, his thoughts, and important events in his lifetimes. One of the supreme evangelical theologians of this century, James I. Packer is a mentor who has considerable influence upon the evangelical christendom throughout the world. He deserves the highest praise as a great theologian of life for his effort of being consistent in theology and life during his whole life. In 2006, when Packer was 80 years old, he published a greatest masterpiece, Praying. His book touched evangelical churches and many of the readers very deeply and incessantly. This book will be a precious present to believers who love and respect him as a classic of prayer for a long long time. The purpose of studying his Prayer is because of its very practical and pastoral reason. The importance of prayer cannot be overemphasized. Prayer is not enough even though we do every moment. Thus, those who realize the insufficiency of ourselves can understand and practice of apostle Paul's maxim, "pray continually(1 Thessalonians 5:17)." Prayer is the right image of a creation in front of God. A creation cannot live without God. Prayer is a passage which can be supplied as the life from God. Christianity is a religion of prayer. We can get the most powerful lesson of prayer through the life of Jesus. All of the great men in the Bible are great men of prayer. The people who made great contributions to the church and the humankind as christians are also great men of prayer. Prayer made great men. They became great men due to prayer. The scale of prayer is universal. Prayer in a cottage reaches toward the throne of heaven. Almighty triune God listens to the prayer of a humble boy. Prayer with tears of a woman moves the heart of God. Prayer is related to God. Thus, prayer is great tool. If it is true, why not pray? Why not pray a sincere prayer what God listen to? Although many believers do lots of prayer, can it be true prayers? Why there are so many prayers which are brought no response. What are the truth of prayer which we do not know? What are the prayers what God really wants? Why our pryer does not get out of a sense of duty? These are serious agonies of believers and ministers. Should we check our prayer again, even though we pray continuously? In this thesis, I would like to offer real guidelines of our prayer life, beyond the dimension of theoretical explanation of Packer's prayer. So I investigated some important events throughout the lifetime of Packer. James I. Packer was born in Gloucester, England in 1926 and grew up in Anglican Church. He established his faith through the encounter with C. S. Lewis's books and experienced conversion when he was a student at Oxford University. At this time, he established a right theology by encountering with some books of puritans, John Owen and Richrad Baxter, and was granted a degree of D. phil. by studying of puritans. After that, he was on the staff of several colleges and institutions, and emigrated to Vancouver, Canada. He wrote about 30 books beyond his representative book, Knowing God. He still has been serving at Regent College in Canada and working actively. And secondly, I looked into the thoughts of James I. Packer. The great men who influenced Packer considerably was John Calvin and Puritans. He became a reformer through Calvin, and became an heir of Puritanism through John Owen and Richrad Baxter. He kept guard over evangelism and Inerrancy with Reformed and Puritanism. And next, I investigated his book Praying which is published in 2006. With this, I referred to the fragmentary articles of Packer about prayer. Packer's prayer is 'God centered prayer' in short. Packer said, prayer should focus on God's goodness not ourselves in the same manner of every side of christian life. Packer's 'God centered prayer' is, firstly, knowing God well who is the object of our prayer, secondly, standing in front of God, thirdly, seeking by the will of God. Packer emphasizes the God centered prayer, "to whom we seek?" not men center prayer, "how to we seek?" We can find out God in his each statement of prayer. And we have to watch ourselves with God center. We should learn humbly what is a new lesson that God is giving and what should we improve when we pray. And without delay we have to practice. In the final analysis, men of prayers is the men who are standing in front of God. Thus, prayer is struggle of people who are trying to live their life what God really wants not for the purpose of having one’s wish granted. We can be transformed as a true christian who knows the true God and resembles Jesus Christ, the true image of God, through the struggles.
