Freshwater bivalves are feeding on a variety of abiotic and biotic sestons, size-ranged from bacterioplankton to zooplankton, by the filtering mechanism. Filter-feeding of bivalves causes the change of planktonic communities and matter cycling in the aquatic system. This study conducted to evaluate the effects of native filter-feeding bivalves on water quality changes in conjunction with the effects on phytoplankton composition and biomass. This study also evaluated the distribution of bivalves in the upstream of Han River system. Unionid bivalves, such as Unio douglasiea, Anodonta woodiana, and Lanceolaria grayana, were observed in the density of 3∼53 ind. m-2 in the upstream of North Han River, where was slow flow and abundant organic matter in the sediment. While Corbiculid (Corbicula fluminea) and Mytilid (Limnoperna fortunei) were abundant (4∼110 ind. m-2) in the South Han River, where was relatively fast flow and a lack of organic matter in the sediment. Filtering rate (FR) of Unio douglasiea and Corbicula fluminea was 0.07∼0.15 L gAFDW-1 h-1 and 0.06∼0.10 L gAFDW-1 h-1, respectively. When bivalves were fed cultured algae (Microcystis aeruginosa, Chlorella vulgaris, Scenedesmus quadricauda), FR was the highest on C. vulgaris (Unio douglasiea: 0.44∼0.54 L gAFDW-1 h-1, Corbicula fluminea: 0.07∼0.64 L gAFDW-1 h-1, Anodonta woodiana: 0.04∼0.61 L gAFDW-1 h-1). FR on Microcystis aeruginosa was relatively low compared to that on Chlorella and Scenedesmus for all tested bivalves. Unio douglasiea showed relatively higher FR on phytoplankton (mostly diatoms) dominated during cold water season (March) than those (mostly cyanobacteria) dominated during summer season (June). These results indicate that FR of filter feeding bivalves are affected by both temperature and the composition of food source (phytoplankton). Bivalve feeding changed nutrients concentration in the water column through both removing sestonic particles and releasing organic and inorganic nutrients. In the feeding study, TN concentration was increased with the food source of M. aeruginosa, mainly due to the increase of NH3-N (4-fold) and NO3-N (1.5-fold). Bivalve, Unio douglasiea showed effective removal of phytoplankton community in the field condition. In the mesocosm study, Unio douglasiea decreased particulate sestons; FR was highest in 2 day (6.24 L gAFDW-1 h-1), and high FR sustained by the end of the experiment (8 day; (0.23 L gAFDW-1 h-1).
