L. V. Beethoven's 32 pieces of piano sonata well display how his music was changed in the early, mid and late periods of his life. Among the pieces, 「Piano Sonata Op.110 Ab Major」was composed in the late period of his life. It is melodic in theme and free in style. The piano sonata music adopted recitativo and Fugue which had not been used in sonata of the period. The purpose of this study is to help better interpret and perform L. V. Beethoven's 「Piano Sonata Op.110 Ab Major」by analyzing the its form and investigating how it reflected characteristics of the composer in his later life. For the purpose, this researcher reviewed related literature and previous studies in order to determine backgrounds behind which the above sonata music was made and musical styles and forms found in the work. Then, the researcher examined each movement of the sonata music in terms of theme, motive, harmony and rhythm. Finally, the researcher tried to understand Beethoven's romantic world of music by analyzing style changes and Fugue in「Piano Sonata Op.110 Ab Major」which were not found in other works of sonata music. Findings of the study can be summarized as follows. The 1st movement of 「Piano Sonata Op.110 Ab Major」has a free, unique sonata style which is somewhat different from the others. The tempo of the movement is moderato, unlike allegro in nearly all other works of sonata music. In the first movement, development shorter than exposition or recapitulation and dramatic changes in tonality are also found. Unlike his earlier pieces of the 2nd movement is faster in tempo by using trio and scherzo of compound ternary form and binary time. The melodic theme of the movement quotes 2 pieces of folk songs, influencing romantic composers like Schubert. The 3rd movement has a complex form in which a variety of styles like introduction, recitativo, arioso and Fugue are combined. This best represents the characteristics of sonata music that Beethoven composed in the later period of his life. It indicates his musical development into the Romanticism, clearly different from what his earlier works were like. In conclusion, the movements of Piano Sonata Op.110 Ab Major」respectively have their own characteristics on one hand, but are uniformly connected with each other on the other hand. Beyond the music of the classical period, otherwise known as the formalistic period, the above sonata music by Beethoven opened the era of the romantic music which was characterized as adopting new styles, revealing composers' emotions and loyal to the very nature of music.
