This paper examines the ideal image and fashion of Korean women in the 1970s in the socio-cultural context. In this regard, this study uses information on the 1970s politics, economy, and culture provided by Chosun Ilbo and Yosungjungang; this study also uses their analysis of the ideal image and fashion of Korean women of the period. In addition, the ideal image and fashion of women are considered from Hamilton’s Meta theory perspective. Newspaper articles from the 1970s were collected by using keywords, and 40 volumes of magazines were collected by season. The data were divided into four categories: the right, life, education and fashion of women; this classification was made from the gender point of view. First, the ideal image of women in the 1970s can be divided into two aspects. The image from the traditional Confucian perspective still existed and restricted the lives of women to housekeeping chores. “The wise mother and the good wife” was the aim of conservatism. On the contrary, with women increasingly participating in society, which was caused by the extension of education and employment, a progressive image of women appeared. This recognized the independence of women. These two aspects coexisted in during the turmoil of change in society. Second, the formation of a new image of women was influenced by feminism and the period’s rapidly changing economic, political, and ideological environments. In 1975, the UN announced “the year of the international woman,” and women’s studies was established in Korea. This advancement might have been due to increased opportunities through education and employment. Korean women gradually assumed more important roles in society. Third, the Korean fashion in the 1970s can be summarized into five aspects. Most importantly, various styles such as mini, midi, maxi, and bell-bottom pants existed, and because the entry of women into public affairs grew, the number of women wearing pants also increased. Subsequently, t-shirts, blue jeans, ready-to-wear clothing, and generally more comfortable and casual style clothing gained popularity. The tailored look and the big look were the popular fashions of the period. Finally, clothing that exposed the body, such as mini skirts, hot pants, bikinis, appeared. Fourth, the abovementioned fashion features can be divided into two aspects according to the ideal image of women. Progressive women had money to buy clothes because they were economically independent. These women embraced a number of styles, including mini, midi, maxi, and bell-bottom pants. Further, pants were developed into different styles such as pant suits. T-shirts and blue jeans as casual wear were very popular among the youth. At the end of the 1970s, the tailored look and the big look, which were copied men’s clothing, were in fashion. Masculine styles such as wide shoulders with pads and neckties strengthened gender equality. Other fashions were dominated by feminine styles, which can be described by words such as beautiful, sweet, and elegant. These styles reflected Korean society’s tendency to regard women as sex objects. Clothing that exposed the body highlights this aspect. Women wore mini skirts, hot pants, and bikinis because they wanted to enhance their sex appeal, propagating the view of women as sex objects. In sum, all aspects of society and culture are closely related with one another, and fashion reflects the values of those aspects. In Korea, the women’s movement represented the dominant cultural values in the 1970s, causing a significant gab between the traditional and new ideal image of women. Accordingly, women’s fashion changed to accommodate their changing style preferences and behaviors.
