The purpose of this study was to make a descriptive-qualitative study of the return-to-work experiences of breast cancer survivers. The subjects in this study were 10 women who were working at the time when they were diagnosed with breast cancer. They were at the age of 30 to 55, and data were gathered from September to November, 2009, by holding an in-depth interview to find out their return-to-work experiences. The findings of the study were as follows: The return-to-work experiences of the breast cancer survivers were categorized into four themes: 'desire for hiding a changing appearance,' 'getting back to normal daily routine life through social support,' 'mixed reactions from people around toward their return-to-work,' 'pressure caused by work and treatment.' The breast cancer survivers took a sick leave of less than six months on the average, and most of them got back to work within three months. They wanted to hide their changing appearance and had a hard time physically as they had to work and receive treatment at the same time. Besides, they found it burdensome to take time to receive treatment, and were under financial pressure. And they got increasingly sensitive. They couldn't decide whether to get back to work or not, and a lot of social support and the backing of colleagues served to step up their return-to-work and adjustment. They became stressed out when others ridiculed their return-to-work or were overly interested in it, and they felt at ease when others treated them in the same comfortable manner as before. In order to ensure the successful return-to-work of breast cancer survivers, they should receive education or counseling about how to take care of their changing appearance or cope with it, and the kind of environments that provide them with the best social support as much as possible should be created. People around them should be advised to look at their return-to-work in a positive way. As having to work and receive treatment at the same time put a strain on them, legal measures should be taken to allow them to take a sufficient sick leave, to regulate their working hours flexibly, to receive more benefits from insurance, to be given ample emotional support and not to be discriminated in any way. Not only their colleagues and families but their employers and the government should try to back them up from various angles in order for them to fully show what they can do.
