Catalyst for the transesterification of soybean oil was prepared by immobilizing lipases to either mesoporous or meso/macroporous silica. Lipases used were Amano lipase from Bulkhoderia and lipase AK from Pseudomonas Fluorescens. Pore size, surface modification, time and temperature of reaction, methods how to add methanol to reaction system, the nature and amount of catalysts and amount of water added were chosen as process variables to investigate the yields and product compositions of the repeated transesterification. In general the use of lipase produced an incompletely decomposed methylester such as tetracosanoic methyl ester which had an adverse effect on the composition of the biodiesel. The production of the methylester decreased and thus the yield of biodiesel increased by including macropores to mesopores and modifying the pore surface to ensure the protection of active sites in the catalysts. The use of macroporeas rather than mesopores increased the yield from 60% to 70%. The surface modification with octyltriethoxysilane (OTES) generally enhanced the transesterification yield by 15%. The lipases lost its activity during the reactions above 50°C. The addition of methanol should be occurred so that its concentration was kept low to ensure the activity of the lipases not affected by the alcohol. The addition of water about 5wt% to the first transesterification system enabled the yields maintained at the initial value for the next repeated reactions more than 10. Such trends mentioned above were not changed by the nature of lipases.
