This thesis looks at using the play generated through doing drama as a mechanism to help create some form of parental involvement outside of the classroom. It used the case study format to look at one instance where drama was used in the English as a foreign language (EFL) setting. For this thesis play is defined as fun and excitement, as well as entering a fantasy world, following the rules that make up the framework of the fantasy world, and being intelligent (having to think in some way) as defined by Cook (1997). To see if the play that is generated by using a drama in the classroom carries over outside of the project three things must be ascertained. To determine if this is possible, it must first be seen if the students are engaged through play by doing a drama project. But, the play by itself is not enough. It needs to be determined if the excitement and fun that is inherent in play can carry over outside of the project into the classroom and to the home. Finally, it needs to be seen if this carryover can help to create some form of parental involvement. To accomplish these goals a test was set up that used drama in an elementary school EFL setting. The methods of data collection included the use of student journals to gauge the students’ feelings during the project as well as the time that they spent and with whom outside of the project. The second data collection procedure was a parent survey that was administered at the end of the drama project. This method was selected to try to get the parents to state what they saw as their role during the project, and how they helped or did not help their child. The third data collection method was a follow up parent interview. This was to show the feelings of parents who felt strongly about the project. The final data collect was from the English teacher at the elementary school who taught the students in their regular classroom. The results of this thesis showed that drama did allow most of the students to play, and that those students that were playing carried this play over to their homes where they interacted with their parents in various ways. The students that were playing also seemed to gain confidence in their regular English classes in the school. There were a few students who did not end up playing with the language throughout the project, and they did not get involved with their parents, and did not gain the confidence in the regular classroom that others did.
