The thesis was intended to comprehensively evaluate the education system of Goryeo Dynasty period from the viewpoint of educational history, Gwageo(the state examination) and the history of Confucianism. The education in the era of Goryeo Dynasty was developed based on historical tradition of the Great Learning in ancient states. Three kingdoms had developed the Great Learning of their own, and in the late period of Shilla, the national examination system(in three grades), called Dokseo sampoomgwa, was implemented in an attempt to cultivate the Confucian scholars(students), which was the barometer of educational performance. Following such tradition, Goryeo was able to pave the way for further developing the education system, which was proved by King Taejo's effort to establish the school in Seogyung and educate the Confucianism. Since then, the kings, more or less, were interested in education development and a considerable achievement was virtually made. And with regard to the Great Learning, it's noteworthy that King Sungjong employed the policy advocating the Confucianism, amending the culture and institutions, while establishing the school, called Kukjagam, and laid the foundation for educating the Confucianism. At the time, King Sungjong aggressively adopted the policy encouraging the national school system to accommodate the children of provincial officials, resulting in a significant development of Kukjagam, which played a great role in cultivating the government officials and in establishing the new educational tradition in the society. The students of Kukjagam at the beginning were mostly from the provincial area, but as aristocratism was getting developed, the nobles began to ban the students from provincial areas from joining the central government posts. On the other hand, the nobles tended to avoid learning at the Kukjagam, but to prefer the privateschools, the traditional education system. Consequently, it changed to the private school-dominated system soon during the days of King Deokjong Sookjong, which was represented by Sahak Sipeedo(12 private schools). They were founded in King Moonjong era and Moonhungongdo by Choi Choong, among others, was the largest one. Choi Choong attempted to cultivate the students of firm character. However since the education system at the time was aimed at training the government servants the private education system was also focused on preparing the Gwageo(the state examination), and moreover, the private education system that tended to be more closed than national school resulted in creating the factionalism to some extent. As aforementioned, the Confucianism was encouraged on the back of booming national school and private education system in the capital area in Goryeo, and the Confucian school-led education system in the provincial area was also improved and put on track. The Confucian school, one of the state schools, had a function to serve the ancient saint and sage as well as to educate the children of provincial officials. The central govemment dispatched the teachers to educate the students, and the curriculums were presumed to be developed to prepare for the state examination. Besides, Dongseo Hakdang(village school) was available as elementary school. Seodang(private village school) was thought to be widely distributed but in fact, it was limited to some extent due to poor support and lack of systematic support. Gwageo system(the state examination system) made a great commitment to developing the Confucian centered education system in Goryeo Dynasty period. The Gwageo system was first employed by the recommendation of Ssanggi who became naturalized in the days of King Kwangjong, and had been implemented over the field of Jesool(art & literature), Myunggyung(scriptures), Eui(Medical), Bokgwa(astronomy). Qualification for application, with some exceptions depending on subject, was limited to Yangmin(intermediate class of people or above). The examination supervisors were called Jigonggeo, and the people passed the examination showed them every courtesy, calling them Eunmoon or Jwajoo as the position of Moonsaeng. The officials who passed the state examinations formed a political influence, playing a leading role in education and cultural area. Among those are Choi Choong, An Hyang, Lee Saek, and Chung Mong-joo who outspoken their educational ideas. We can better understand the education system of Goryeo Dynasty period more specifically through their ideas. The education and ideology of Goryeo Dynasty period had been changed drastically since they accommodated the Sung Confucianism. Unlike traditional literal Confucianism, Sung Confucianism employed the Soogeehak(self-disciplined)-centered system, emphasizing the ideological legitimacy. Based on the principal of Sung Confucianism, the Confucianists in the late Goryeo began reforming the academic traditions and solidifying the political influence, while pursuing the political and social revolution thereby eventually achieving the goal of realizing the civil administration-dominated society. In general, a Confucianism-based education system in Goryeo was developed in a way for cultivating the political talents and such a principle had been remainedunchanged even after accommodating the Sung Confucianism, but given the tendency that valued the technical education and political practicality is what noteworthy in reviewing the character of education system in Goryeo Dynasty period.
