A Research on the Real State of 2-Year High School Students' Abilities of Applying Matrix to the Settlement of Problems in Real Life원문보기

This research aims to explore types of 2-year high school students' application of matrix to the settlement of problems in real life and its real state. In order to attain this purpose, this research divides application of matrix to the settlement of problems in real life by step and analyzes its success and failure rates, and main types of failure according to survey questions. The research questions are as follows. (ⅰ) How is the real state of 2-year high school students' application of matrix to the settlement of problems in real life? (ⅱ) How is the problem's failure type by survey question and by step? This research conducted surveys of 155 2-year high school students in Jinju-si of Gyeongsasng-namdo, Daejeon Metropolitan City and Cheongju-si of Chungcheong-bukdo. It analyzes questionnaires except 50 ones judged as not giving significant outcomes. The questionnaire consists of 6 survey questions modified referring to the Mathematics I textbook following the 7th Education Procedure. In particular, the structure and the epilogue of survey questions are prepared on the basis of the preliminary test and comments of experts and fellow teachers. The outcomes of this research are as follows. The comprehensive outcomes of questionnaires on students' application of matrix to the settlement of problems in real life shows that the step of making equations has success rates (approximately 70 to 80%) but the step of making matrix and the step of answer description of the process of calculation respectively have 54% and 50% of average success rates. It is natural that the step of making equations has high success rates because the level of that step is low enough to be solved by the subjects. On the contrary, the step of making matrix has greatly lower success rates than the step of making equations. It is inferred from this that students' abilities of interpreting situation of problems to symbolic systems (matrix or equation). On the whole, failure rates of students' answer description through matrix are lowest. In particular, 38% of students who succeed in other all steps fails to answer description through matrix. This means that students themselves may not correctly cognize what to do although they conduct the right operation in the process of resolving by using matrix. Reversely, this tells us that students also do not cognize what to do although they operate incorrectly. This is because students lack thought of self-reflection in the step of calculation. This causes prevents students from cognizing clearly what process is their calculation operating the relevant element. As a result, students cannot describe the answer although solve the given problem quantitatively more 90%. The outcomes by characteristic of survey question show that success rates of making matrix vary according to methods of presenting tables. This is because many students stick to the shape of table given by the condition of survey questions. They make a matrix as the table is given, while they are not connect the table to the meaning of the relevant survey question. The conclusion of this research are as follows. First, generally they have a cognitive difficulty in expressing circumstances of problems by matrix to apply matrix to problems in real life. The aim of instruction of the matrix unit is to encourage the utility of matrix and to apply matrix to the settlement of problems in actual life. It is required to instruct students stressing activities of applying matrix to circumstance of problem, from a view point of the above aim. Second, many of students cannot correspond a survey question to the relevant element in the final step of making matrix although they almost solved the problem. This is because lack thought of self-reflection on their calculation in the process of solving problems. So, the introduction of the matrix unit actually requires to be done in the direction of inducing this though of self-reflection. Third, many students have difficulty in the calculation of matrix (e.g. arithmetic operations of product of matrix and inverse matrix, etc.). In particular, the type of product of matrix affect whether or not the operation of product is successful. So, it is helpful to the introduction of the matrix unit to present various types of product of matrix and to have students calculate them. Finally, many students does not correspond the table given in a survey question to the equation relevant to the given condition. This meaningless correspondence comes from their sticking to on the type of the table. This is related to solutions of the frequently-used existing survey questions. It is also helpful to the introduction of the matrix unit to have students to deal with various types of survey questions.
