The purpose of this study was to examine the awareness of elementary school students and teachers about new sports in a bid to prove the oughtness of the insertion of new sports into the revised 7th national P.E. curriculum and step up the spread of new sports. The subjects in this study were four students and two teachers providing new sports instruction in elementary school in Seoul, who were selected after introducing new sports and explaining how to proceed with new sports instruction. An in-depth interview and instructional observation were utilized to gather data, and additional documents were collected. Triangulation, member checks and peer debriefing were employed to ensure the authenticity of the data. The findings of the study were as follows:
First, new sports made it possible for the elementary teachers to conduct P.E. class in a more smooth manner. The teachers were scarcely aware of new sports in the past, but they learned about them after taking internal training courses, and then they made active use of new sports in P.E. class. When the teachers in the school were asked to reserve new sports teaching aids in advance, they put the teaching aid to frequent use to conduct optional activities in third- to sixth-grade P.E. classes, but they got to use the teaching aids less often over time, probably because of the characteristics of new sports. Another reason seemed that the school was just equipped with a small number of teaching aids. The introduction of new sports in the school served as an opportunity to provide the local community with up-to-date P.E. information. When new sports were introduced to parents in a parent- training session, the parents and their children got to enjoy new sports. It showed that school physical education could give a boost to P.E. activities among local residents.
Second, the way the students looked at new sports was categorized into three: 'encounter with new sports,' 'positive view of new sports' and 'the limits of new sports.'
In the category 'encounter with new sports,' the students viewed new sports as something new and fresh, probably because they were exposed to the sports for the first time without having any knowledge about them. Some deemed new sports to be safe and easy to play, due to the safe materials of the bat and ball of teeball and the simple and flexible game rules. Some found new sports very challenging when this researcher introduced a bamboo dance, one of new sports. When they saw video clips about a bamboo dance, they thought that it would be possible for them to perform it though it was a foreign folk dance, and they desired to make it more perfect by adding music and subtitles, which could be called a challenging spirit.
In the category 'positive view of new sports,' they responded to the sports in diverse ways. Those who weren't good at sports and who were girls were able to participate in new sports without fear thanks to the simple game rules and the safety of teaching aids. Some felt they did something worthwhile when they gave a presentation of bamboo dance video clips, though that gave them a hard time. Some were aware of the importance of cooperation while they designed motions. Those who played teeball found the new sport to be of use for playing other sports, as the rules of teeball and baseball games were similar. Yet there were some limits to new sports in that the characteristics of teaching aids and the simple game rules resulted in demotivating the students with excellent motor skills or making them bored.
Third, the way the teachers perceived new sports was categorized into three: 'an opportunity of playing new sports,' 'the looks of new sports in class' and 'challenges for the vitalization of new sports.'
In the category 'an opportunity of playing new sports,' the teachers felt that other elementary teachers didn't provide P.E. instruction well due to their poor understanding of the curriculum, P.E.-avoiding climate and a shortage of P.E. facilities. Under the circumstances, they thought that the introduction of new sports would serve as a chance to eliminate the problem to normalize P.E. instruction.
In the category 'the looks of new sports in class,' the students felt that they had a chance to learn latest sports that were enjoyable and appropriate at their level. They regarded the rules of new sports as simple and flexible, since new sports were flexible, variable and simplified the sophisticated rules of modern sports. They thought that new sports were attractive enough to stir up their participation in that they were new and could be enjoyed by both of boys and girls. And they looked upon new sports as safe due to the safe materials of teaching aids. The teachers expected students who were exposed to new sports to have more interest in modern sports, but they pointed out the limits of new sports at the same time. Students with strong needs for exercise or with superb motor skills might find them boring, and the sports could be played only when a sufficient number of teaching aids is prepared.
In the category 'challenge for the vitalization of new sports,' the participants stressed that a variety of teaching methods should be utilized to satisfy the needs of learners and let them learn about the value of physical activities instead of merely introducing new sports in class. And they believed that only systemized new sports for which plenty of teaching aids are prepared should be taught on a selective basis.
