The purpose of this study was to examine Hwang Ji-woo's poetic texts from a perspective of intertextuality. Intertextuality, which is part of a text linguistics theory, is the basis of the interpretation and semantic analysis of literary works, especially poetic texts. It's meant in this study to look into Hwang Ji-woo's poetic texts from standpoints of 'repetition' and 'transformation,' which were major prerequisites of intertextuality.
Hwang Ji-woo composed 'deconstructive poems' and 'poems without any typical forms' under the authoritarian regime in the 1980s and presented the new poetic texts to contemporary readers who got accustomed to existing poetic grammar. His six poetry collections were largely divided into three different periods(early, middle and late) in consideration of the external conditions of the texts and contemporary circumstances, and the interrelationship of the texts in each period was discussed.
Chapter Ⅱ looked into the intertextuality of his early poems.
In the early poems, he repeatedly used key poetic words such as 'bird' in the first poetry collection and 'tree' in the second one to stress the meaning of the words. The intertextuality of the early poems was investigated in light of the fact that his awareness of reality changed while he continued to compose the poems.
Chapter Ⅲ discussed the intertextuality of his poems in the middle period.
The poet repeated core poetic words such as 'camel' in the third poetry collection and 'crab' in the fourth one in pursuit of getting out of reality and an unworldly world, and he repeatedly described 'the discovery of others' in various ways. His awareness of reality in this period was discussed to define the intertextuality of his poems in the middle period.
Chapter Ⅳ examined the intertexuality of his late poems.
His fifth poetry which included 12 poetic texts. Out of the 12 texts, nine were adapted and then contained again in the sixth poetry collection. So how the poetic texts of the fifth collection were transformed in the sixth one was checked, and how 'self in daily routine life' was repeatedly described in the two poetry collections was explored. Finally, the poetic texts that repeatedly unveiled the reality awareness of the speakers and the poet were investigated.
This study was meaningful in that it attempted to analyze Hwang Ji-woo's six poetry collections from a viewpoint of intertextuality and discuss the significance of his poetic texts in the history of literature.
