The purpose of this study was to explore educational methods geared toward a subjective reception of novels. As school novel education is led by teachers only, students who are to enjoy appreciating novels don't show interest in novels. Therefore it's meant in this study to take an approach toward literature from a perspective of reception theory to discuss how to boost the class participation of learners in novel education. Choi In-hoons novel titled 'Square' was selected to make an inquiry into a teaching method geared toward fostering the subjective reception ability of learners and to map out lesson plans about that. Novels are closely linked to reality and make it possible to understand human lifestyles from various angles, and this study is meaningful in that it tried to present feasible reception strategies tailored to the different structures of novel reception.
The reception theory was introduced primarily by Jauβ and Iser, who were German literary theorists in the 1960s. Literary phenomena consist of writer, text and reader, and this theory focused on readers who weren't considered important. The reception theory is a reader-centered literary theory that makes an interpretation and finds a meaning through text-reader interaction. According to that theory, readers go through a creative materialization process to eliminate their uncertainty about texts through horizon of expectation. They understand texts in a self-directed, creative and open manner, and they are allowed to grasp the meaning of the texts from diverse standpoints. This theory is in compliance with the 7th national curriculum that stresses reinforced learner experiences, and that also is in line with an educational trend that accentuates spontaneity and human-centered education. In this theor, the positive roles of readers are emphasized while they go through the materialization process. In effect, the subjective reading process of readers and interaction among texts, readers and teacher are two major factors of literary education.
In this study, the structure of novel reception was investigated by analyzing the selected novel written by Choi In-hoon, and strategies that could be applied to education of that novel were presented. The structure of novel reception was structuralized into four in association with the characteristics of cognitive and affective thinking: confirming the horizon of expectations, interaction of the horizon, shifting the horizon, and enlarging the horizon. After the selected novel was briefly analyzed, novel reception strategies were selected for each of the stages. In the stage of confirming the horizon of expectations, two strategies were mapped out: predicting the content of the novel and removing barriers. In the stage of the interaction of the horizon, two strategies were presented as well: summarizing the plot and filling out blanks. In the stage of the shift of the horizon, another two strategies were provided: communicating with the receivers of the text, and communicating with other readers. In the final stage of enlarging the horizon, two strategies were prepared as well: experiencing intertextuality and creating receptive texts.
In order to improve teaching-learning methods in novel instruction, how that instruction is actually conducted should be grasped first of all. Therefore the state of novel instruction was checked, and then learning methods tailored to the circumstances of high school education were devised to show the possibility for the autonomous novel reception of learners. The findings of the study might not be generalizable since the novel education model focusing on learner activities was just prepared for the selected novel written by Choi In-hoon.
