John Wesley’s theology is said to be a four-sided principle. This four-sided principle is made based on Scripture, tradition, logic, and experience. Among them, John Wesley prioritizes Scripture the most and lived his life based on it. The reason behind proceeding on this idea is that he was influenced by his father’s Anglican High Church and his mother’s Puritanism as well as the education he received when he was young; he started having faith slowly through his experience in the Oxfordfellows and the Holy Club during his Charter House and Oxford school periods. He grew his faith reading Jeremy Taylor’s The Imitation of Christ and William Law’s Christian Perfection. After studying the traditional social attitudes and behaviors towards John Wesley’s Holiness Movement, the reason behind the start of the Holiness Movement was analyzed through roles and factors, and the influences the movement had on society was studied. After rejecting to follow his father and have his ministry in Epworth-his hometown-,Wesley went to Georgia, America as a missionary. On the ship, he met the Moravian Brethren and was astonished by their faith that showed no fear of the heavy seas. For the missions in Georgia, even though he had decided to missions to the native population, it did not happen as he thought, and he even came to the point being chased out in the end. The cause of the missions failure was because he thought that only he himself can build his own faith. Afterthat, he regularly met with the Moravian Brethren at Herrnhut, the base of the Moravians, and developed his faith more while making his own theology. The important thing here is that he changed his heart, and the Methodist Movement was founded on passionate experiences. The period of John Wesley (1703-1791), the founder of the Methodist Church, was during when British society and the religious circles were extremely corrupted and deteriorated as well as being a time of economic reform and industrial revolutions in the 18th Century. As a great religious reformer who stirred British society and revived the religious revival movements in Britain within its industrial society filled with miserable lives of the poor laboring classes and extreme extravagance and vanity, John Wesley ended up raising a religious revival movement by finding individual estrangement and self-identity with wide change in the income level from an agricultural society through industrial and agricultural revolutions. Moreover, during the difficult times when the poor was generated since many people lost their jobs and the discrepancy between the rich and the poor occurred as many people migrated to cities, Wesley started his ministry and pushed forth into the societal Holiness movement passionately. He always thought about the weak and the poor first while encouraged and spreading God’s kingdom to commoners such as laborers, farmers, and miners. These laborers and farmers made resumptions, bands, or repentance classes and came to provide the foothold for the Methodist Revival Movement through spiritual training such as Bible classes and prayer training. The Methodists were always on the side of the poor, uneducated, prisoners, alcohol addicts, and neglected and increased the number of the Methodist church members to about 120 thousands by walking 250-thousand-miles and preaching 42,4000 sermons for 51 years during their evangelism trip by traveling 90 miles everyday with the acceleration of the middle class formation as the turning point. They came to make a religious revival. The periodic circumstances of income increase, economic discrepancy, and class conflicts of the industrial revolutions of that time had influences on the individuals and society and became the starting point for the Holiness Movement; consequently, a religion was generated and went forth to the United States and situated in Korea like this while, furthermore, bringing changes in human rights, ecology, poverty, economical conflicts, women rights, slavery, environment and ecological issues, and ecumenism. Wesley’s Holiness movement shifted societal structures and unfolded a societal Holiness movement recreated with religious, political, economic, cultural, and societal classes and internal factors of the Holiness movement itself by leading the reform. The gospel-evangelical movement, which revives new life into God’s kingdom, both has influences on the Holiness movement by being the individual factor of social reform and functions also as the influence the Holiness movement has on society by making social integration and acknowledging the ability of human beings. Those who revive the image of God within humanity and further experience the world by being reborn end up reaching the perfection of Christ by proceeding to the societal holiness through love and good deeds. This perfection is momentary and gradual as well as something which helps us to obtain salvation through the repletion of love until death. By reviewing the direction and social coherence of the gospel evangelism along with societal consideration on John Wesley’s Holiness movement more, I’d like this research to help in finding the evangelical direction of the 21st Century’s Methodist Church for metropolitan area missionaries.
