This study examined changes in pre-service elementary school teachers' perception in the three aspects, the use of MBL, educational effect of MBL and application willingness towards MBL in order to grasp the possibility to introduce MBL in elementary school. The subjects of this study included 29 pre-service elementary school teachers who were selected from juniors in ○○ University of Education and who chose and took ‘science exploration experiment’ among elective specialty aptitude subjects. The students were surveyed three times while participating in two weeks of MBL basic experiment, four weeks of learning to master experimental instruments, two weeks of advanced activity and seven weeks of classes delivered largely through presentation. The study analyzed the answers 25 pre-service elementary school teachers provided in the survey in order to examine changes in their perception of MBL. The results of the analysis were as follows. First, as for the use of MBL, the pre-service elementary school teachers showed very positive perception of the ‘convenience of measurement,' ‘convenience of changing materials' and ‘accuracy of data,' and also scored 0.16 points more in the ‘convenience of using a sensor’ after receiving class. However, as for the ‘convenience of experimental method,' their score rose 0.32 points and then declined by 0.28 points, showing a similar level of perception to the level before experiencing MBL. Their score for the ‘convenience of time reduction' declined 0.36 point first, and later 0.12 points further. This indicates that as the level of experiment and the use of sensor get more difficult, more teachers perceived time reduction was not achieved. Second, overall the pre-service elementary school teachers perceived MBL's educational effects positively, and their perception turned more positive as class continued further. Especially as for the notion that ‘interest’, ‘easy interpretation of result’, ‘efficacy of data collection,’ ‘accurate and objective observation’ and ‘quantification' were possible, all of the pre-service teachers displayed very positive perception. With regard to ‘improvement of communication' during an experiment, ‘improvement of concentration' on an experiment, ‘improvement of the ability to handle instruments’, ‘improvement of exploring ability,’ the pre-service teachers had slightly negative perception before class, however, after the class their negative perception all turned positive. In addition, the pre-service teachers also displayed more positive perception in ‘improvement of understanding concepts,’ ‘improvement of ability to interpret graphics’ and ‘change in cognitive concept by fast feedback.’ Third, considering the pre-service teachers' changed perception in ‘usefulness of class’, ‘willingness to introduce’, ‘whether or not to use as alternative experiment,' the pre-service teachers perceived the necessity of introducing MBL experiment in experimental activities. Fourth, with regard to ‘the most useful experiment’ area, the pre-service teachers perceived that the use of MBL in the areas of energy and material was useful. This appears to be because research on MBL was vigorously carried out in the areas of chemistry and physics in middle school curriculum and in the areas of energy and material in the elementary school curriculum. The results above has reached conclusion that the pre-service teachers had positive perception of introducing MBL in elementary school and that MBL will be used as an useful instrument for science class for elementary students if it is introduced.
