Hydrogen production by the reaction of aluminum alloys and NaOH solution was studied for an automotive proton exchange membrane fuel cells(PEMFC) application. A hurdle to the production of hydrogen via this corrosion reaction is that temperature control was necessary for constant hydrogen supply, the aluminum surface is easily passivated. In this paper, chemical and electrochemical studies on the reaction aluminum with alkaline solution were performed. As a results, Higher rate of hydrogen production was observed at the reaction with Al alloys that contain impurities in atmospheric and high pressure batch reactor(up to 18bar). and conversion of hydrogen was shown over 92 percent. Also, Continuous hydrogen production was performed by temperature control. Passivation of aluminum appeared with 1M NaOH and temperatures of over 70oC. Potential, concentration of alkaline solution and temperature effected on the passivation of aluminum. PEMFC cell by feeding hydrogen produced from aluminum and high purity hydrogen into the anode were shown similar performance.
