The purpose of this study is to analyze the appearing frequency of trees included in the elementary school textbook of 7th and revised national curriculum(1-1, 2-1), and to find out the recognition level of elementary school teachers for name of trees based on that frequency. For this study, the questionnaires include colored pictures of 44 kinds of trees which appear in the textbook more than 2 pages, showing tree characteristics remarkably. 197 elementary school teachers in Daegu were selected. The results are the as follows: First, 68 kinds of trees are mentioned in the textbook and 45 kinds of trees presented on more than 2 page were included to questionnaires. Elementary teachers' average recognition level for the names of 44 kinds of trees in textbook was low ; 56.0% Second, 13 kinds of trees were recognized by more than 90% of teachers - 7 species were fruit trees ; Common apple, Pear Tree, Wine Grape, Kaki, Mandarin Orange, Maiden Hair Tree, Orange Tree. 6 species were plants for landscape; Rose, Japanese Maple, Japanese Flowering Cherry, Korean Forsythia, Bamboo, Rose of Sharon. Trees which had recognition level of less than 10% were Korean Paulownia, Red Bark Oak, Mongolian Oak, Poplar, Katsura Tree, Paper Mulberry. Third, teachers' recognition level for name of trees showed difference by the 'place of birth', 'teaching career', ‘whether completing a first degree in elementary science education or not' but not by 'sex’ : Teachers from agricultural district recognize trees better than teachers from big cities or small towns. Recognition level of teachers who have teaching careers for more than 10 years was much higher than that of teachers having teaching careers for less than 10 years. Teachers who hold a bachelors' degree in elementary science education have much higher recognition level than teachers who hold a bachelor's degree in other major.
