The purpose of the study is to examine the effects of art therapy on relationships between siblings experiencing PTSD by conducting art therapy for those experiencing PTSD and analyzing the results, and specific topics of this study are as follows.
First, examine the changes of sibling relationships with a test of sibling relationship to study how art therapy influences the relationships between siblings experienced PTSD.
Second, examine the changes of sibling relationships with Kinetic Family Drawing(KFD) and Family Systems Diagnostic Procedure to study how art therapy influences the relationships between siblings experiencing PTSD.
Third, in aspects of changes in Family Systems Diagnostic Procedure for siblings experienced PTSD, the sibling relationships was positively changed in a way that is mutually dynamic and cooperative attitude in drawings in a post-test, compared to the individualized and non-cooperative ones in a pre-test.
Forth, examine the changes of sibling relationships with an interview with a fosterer to study how art therapy influences the relationships between siblings experiencing PTSD.
Fifth, examine the changes of sibling relationships in drawings from each session of art therapy and behaviours to study how art therapy influences the relationships between siblings experiencing PTSD.
To prove these study topics, art therapy program was conducted on a pair of siblings experiencing PTSD over 20 times for 60 minutes per week from Dec 6, 2008 to Apr 18 , 2009.
As a tool of measuring the aspects of change in sibling relationships before and after the art therapy program for the siblings who are the object of study, sibling relationship Questionnaire(SRQ), Kinetic Family Drawing(KFD), Family Systems Diagnostic Procedure were used, the aspects of change in sibling relationships in a family was reported and examined by an interview with a fosterer, and the changes of sibling relationships were examined by drawings and behaviors in each session of art therapy. A pre-test of the study was taken 3 weeks before the art therapy program, a post-test was taken 3 weeks after the program and comparison analysis was performed.
The results of this study are as follows;
First, in aspects of change in sibling relationships test for the siblings experiencing PTSD, the score of affability/intimacy increased after the test compared to before the one, and the score of conflict decreased. In addition, out of siblings' relative position/power scores, the score of taking care of siblings and receiving care increased, the score of taking control over siblings and being under the control of siblings decreased meaningfully.
Second, in aspects of change in sibling relationships with KFD test for the siblings experiencing PTSD, a facial expression of a sibling image was omitted or stiffened, and a distance from a sibling image was far in a pre-test compared to a post-test that a mutually dynamic feature and a short distance from the sibling image were expressed. In addition, in aspects of change in sibling relationships with Systems Diagnostic Procedure, it was found that an individualized and a non-cooperative drawing in a pre-test was changed to a cooperative and a mutually complementary one in a post-test.
Third, in interviews with fosterers of siblings experiencing PTSD, the behavior of getting angry and having an argument each other in a family decreased and it was found that their behavior was changed in a way that they praised, respected, and enjoyed playing each other.
Fourth, in the aspects of change in sibling relationships in each session of art therapy program for the siblings experiencing PTSD, it was found that the negative expression against siblings was changed in a positive way that they were considerate and accepted siblings as the session was repeated.
In conclusion of the result of this study, it was proved that art therapy has positive effects on the improvements in relationships between siblings experiencing PTSD.
