Figure skating shows an artistic aspects through the harmony of elegant movements, music and costumes in addition to its technical aspect. As one of the sports with artistic characteristics, what emphasizes the beauty of figure skating the most is the costumes. The costume plays an important role in the artistic consideration of the originality of the skater's acting skills and the skating program, which has to correspond to the music. This study aims to examine the artistic characteristics of figure skating costumes by conducting content analysis studies, and by examining the characteristics of costumes according to their design elements.
The content analysis method was used in the study. A content analysis of figure skating design elements was conducted based on numerous homepages related to figure skating, as well as pictures and videos of various ice shows and world championship tournaments from 2006 to 2009. The items analyzed included color composition, color type, fabric consistency, silhouette, neckline, use of decorations, type of decorations, location of decorations, amount of decorations, amount of skin exposure, sleeves, arm decorations and wrist decorations, sleeve formation, breadth of the skirt, length of the skirt, and skirt hem formation. A total of 221 analysis units in 16 categories were used.
185 photos were selected for the picture material, and the study was conducted based on female figure skaters, who have more variety and a wider scope of designs in their costumes. To increase the validity of the study material, only pictures showing the entire costume and displaying a clear formation were chosen and the data analyzed by using frequence and percents.
In this study, the results of the analysis of the design elements of figure skating costume are as follows:
In the category of color composition, unicolor costumes were the mainstay, comprising 48.11% of the total costumes. Considering the frequency of colors used in the unicolor costumes, black showed the highest rate (13.51%), followed by red (7.57%) and blue (7.03%). In the dual-color costumes, combinations of red and black, and white and black, each represented 4.32% of all costumes. In the category of fabric consistency, the usage of a single fabric type was seen in 47.57% of costumes, while multiple fabric types could be seen in 52.43% of costumes, showing that while more costumes tend to use multiple fabrics, the usage of just one fabric type was also favored.
In the silhouette category, 97.30% of all costumes favored an hourglass form that exuberates the upper and lower body while encircling the waist.
A camisole line, using a slender strap on the shoulders, was the most popular type of neckline, representing 20.54% of costumes. Stand collars with neck decorations and a mixture of various necklines was found in 5% of costumes. Although these scores are relatively low, the designs show the characteristics of figure skating costumes.
In terms of decorations, 98.2% of all figure skating costumes had decorations. Crystal beads were the most frequently used decoration type (21.86%), followed by a combination of spangle beads and crystal beads (19.67%), and various other decorative material such as tape, feathers and lace.
An analysis of the amount of skin exposure in the figure skating costumes showed that the exposure of skin on the upper part of the chest line, waist line and arms determined the amount of exposure. The medium amount of exposure is 65.41%, which shows the shoulders, legs and arms. Costumes that exposed more skin represented 15.68% of all costumes, showing the shoulders, upper chest, waist, arms and legs.
70.81% of the figure skaters' costumes did not have sleeves. Those which had sleeves represented 21.19% of the costumes, and of these, 64.81% featured long, tight sleeves that tightly covered the arms down to the back of the skaters' hands.
5.41% of the figure skaters' costumes had sleeve decorations, while only 3.78% had wrist decorations.
The most popular skirt length was a length that went halfway up the thighs, representing 94.41%. In the analysis of the lower hem of skirts, 32.40% had a curved line, while 30.73% had a straight line, with 15.08% having an unrecognizable form.
The results of the inquiry into the artistic characteristics of figure skating are as follows:
First, figure skating costumes have sensuality. Sensuality is found in the styles that expose the skin while emphasizing the volume of the body. Transparent textiles are frequently used in the costumes, and the costumes are designed to show the curve of the body by directly or indirectly exposing the neckline, waist and legs. The costumes are also designed to glove the skaters body, to present an image of sensuality while exuberantly expressing the body.
Second, figure skating costumes show the beauty of decorations. The decorations produce a fabulous effect while satisfying artistic desires. The costumes use diverse decorative elements, such as vivid colors, crystal beads, spangles, feathers, lace, embroidery and fringes. The decorations induce the viewers to focus on the intense costume that expresses magnificent beauty.
Third, figure skating costumes present the beauty of movement. The drapery, lines, frills, flares and fringes express the image of movement. Furthermore, through visual effects, repetitive and regular movements, and spreading rhythms, the asymmetric and free formations of the costumes show a unique shape. The beauty of movement is presented in the rhythm and the dynamic expression of the costumes.
In general, the costumes of figure skaters have stand collars, with neck, arm and wrist decorations, free form necklines, and irregular skirt hems that are now found in general clothing. To emphasize and intensify a theatrical effect, the figure skaters' costumes are fabulously decorated with spangles, crystal beads, feathers, embroidery and lace, and black, red, and blue are frequently used. The costumes show sensuality through deep necklines, short skirts, and exposure of the waist. The skirts have frills, fringe, flared lines and beads on them to reflect the stage light and emphasize the beauty of movement.
