Variations of mechanical properties have been investigated for glass fiber content, fiber diameter, fiber shape, and fiber orientation angle for glass fiber reinforced polyamide 66. Glass fiber orientations in the injection molded specimens were also observed by X-ray CT. Polymer used in this study was Polyamide 66 supplied by Rhodia Polyamide Co., Ltd. Glass fibers were circular and flat types supplied by NEG and Nittobo respectively. Glass fibers were not orientated at skin however those were highly orientated to flow direction just under the skin. Glass fibers at core layer were oriented to the thickness direction instead of flow direction. This phenomena verified that fountain flow occurs when molted polymer fills thin cavity. Tensile strength of cut specimen showed a range of 81% to 89% compared with ASTM specimen’s tensile strength. Mechanical property increased as increasing glass fiber content. However there were no big differences on glass fiber orientations for glass fiber content. The tensile properties in the flow direction were higher than those in perpendicular to the flow direction. Tensile properties increased by decreasing of glass fiber diameters and there were no big differences on glass fiber orientation. Tensile strength of circular glass fiber reinforced polymer was higher compared with flat glass fiber reinforced polymer. Circular glass fiber was more effective in fiber orientation than flat glass fiber in the skin layer.
