This study is on the method of music therapy using Korean traditional music. Music is closely connected with our daily life. One's favorite music can help improve relationship with others by creating a familiar environment. In addition, music is widely enjoyed by people from early age, so people can get close easily to each other through music. Music serves to form a way of thinking and build it up. Music therapy, using music which enriches human life, can improve problem behaviors of the subjects. It uses music to recover, improve and maintain both physical and mental health for healing purpose. I conducted this research with special reference to therapy for the elderly.
Music therapy for Korean people has so far used mostly western classical music and instrument. My feeling regret for this led to this research. Therefore, it can be more effective for music therapy to employ our own traditional music and instrument with its own spirit, history and beauty.
This study was based on a 70-year-old who had slight symptoms of dementia and received no music therapy. The therapy session was carried out once a week, with total 15 sessions, which were divided into three stages.
The first stage covered music therapy using folk music such as Arirang, Nylriria, Doraji-Taryung, and boating song. In the second stage, the subject practiced traditional rhythm of Semachy, Jajinmori, and Huimory employing traditional instrument, such as Janggu, Buk(a drum), and Sogo(a small drum). The third stage was conducted using Korean traditional musical instruments, such as Sanjo Gayageum, 25-string Gatageum, and Danso. In each session, the activities and the change in emotion of the subject were carefully observed.
I conducted this research in the hope that it will contribute to enhance the status of Korean traditional music in music therapy.
