Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate postpartum edema mainly complained by puerperal women, to examine the relationships between postpartum weight loss and Edema Index, and to provide fundamental data about postpartum edema and Evaluation Criteria of postpartum edema.
Methods : The objectives are 432 postpartum women. Age, pregnancy period, type of delivery, parity, pregravida(PG) weight, PG BMI, gestational maximum(GMx) weight, GMx BMI were recorded. The body composition of 432 women who was taken postpartum care in Woosuk oriental medical postpartum care center from January 2008 to December 2008 were analyzed by Body Composition Analyzer(Inbody 2.0). Body composition was also checked within 5.44±1.61 day of delivery and after 15.85±1.91 day of delivery by Body Composition Analyzer.
Results : Mean value for postpartum 1st BCA Edema Index(ECF/TBW) of 432 women was 0.3353±0.0138. 272 women(63%) got more than 0.33 of Edema Index. From this Mean value and Edema Index distribution of women, We suggest that we can diagnose more than 0.33 of Edema Index as Postpartum Edema. Mean value for postpartum 2nd BCA Edema Index was 0.3195±0.0090. 51 women(11.8%) got more than 0.33 of Edema Index.
There was no correlation between 1st BCA Edema Index and the weight gain during pregnancy period, but, 2nd BCA Edema Index was negatively correlated with PG weight, PG BMI, GMx weight, GMx BMI, weight and BMI gain during pregnancy period. There was a significant negative correlation between 1st BCA Edema Index and the 1st BCA weight loss, but, 2nd BCA Edema Index was negatively correlated with 2nd BCA weight loss in normal delivery group.
Conclusion : This study suggests that evaluation criteria of postpartum edema is more than 0.33 of Edema Index score, and Edema Index measured by Body Composition Analyzer is effective for the diagnosis of postpartum edema.
Key Words : Postpartum Edema, Diagnostic Criteria, Edema Index, Body Composition Analysis
