The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of intensive trunk stabilizing training on balance and gait in patients with hemiplegia. The subjects of this study were 20 hemiplegic patients who have admitted in hospital over 6 month less than 1 year since the day of onset. Their mean age is 57 and 12 of them were male and 8 female. The control group (n=10) had only general exercise therapy, and the experimental group (n=10) had both the general exercise therapy and intensive trunk stabilizing training using sling board. Patients were put both arms on the sling board and induced to exercise of 4 ways by therapist. They were treated for four weeks, five times a week, and 30 minutes each session. To determine effects of intensive trunk stabilizing training, I measured ability of trunk control, muscle activity, balance, speed of gait and endurance which were done before and after the intensive training using sling board. The results of this study were summarized as follows. First, there were significant difference in TIS (p<.001) and muscle activity of RA (p<.001), EQ (p<.01), ES (p<.01), Multifidus (p<.05) in experimental group. There were significant difference in TIS (p<.01) and muscle activity of RA (p<.05), ES (p<.05) between groups after the training. Second, there were significant difference in FMA (Balance) in control group (p<.05) and in experimental group (p<.01) after intensive trunk stabilizing training. There were significant difference MTD-Balance in control group (p<.01) and in experimental group (p<.001) after intensive trunk stabilizing training. There was significant difference in MTD-Balance comparing groups after intensive trunk stabilizing training (p<.001). Third, there were significant difference in speed of gait and endurance measuring gait function in experimental group (p<.05), but there was no difference between groups. Fourth, correlations of ability of trunk control and muscles (RA, EO, ES, Multifidus) for stabilizing of trunk were positive. Correlations of ability of trunk control and MTD-Balance was negative and 6-minute was positive. correlations of FMA (Balance) and 10-meter was negative. In conclusion, intensive trunk stabilizing training using sling-board increase trunk control which is impaired due to hemiplegia, leading to improvement of balance function, gait speed and endurance. As this study proved effect of particular intensive trunk stabilizing exercise using sling to hemiplegic patients, in general has applied to patients suffered with musculoskeletal disease, it could identify importance of trunk stabilizing and control.
