Vouchers to support rehabilitative treatment and services for children with disabilities have been of growing interest. Also, provision of music therapy as a voucher program has significant implications for further development of this profession in Korea. The purpose of this study was to examine circumstances and quality of current music therapy services provided to children with disabilities as one of vouchers. This study also investigated how music therapy providers perceive the most desirable environment for music therapy services and what they consider as areas to be improved for better work environment and service provision.
Participants in this study included 46 males and females who are currently practicing music therapy in Seoul, Gyeonggi‐do, Incheon, Gyeongsangnam do, Daejun, Daegu, Gangwon do areas. They filled out the questionnaire that included following four categories: (1) the demographic information and professional experiences of respondents, (2) current circumstances of music therapy services as voucher programs, (3) expectations for desirable service environment, and (4) recommendations for better provision of music therapy services.
Results of the survey showed that 78.3% of the respondents completed undergraduate and/or graduate degrees in music therapy. 89.1% of the respondents obtained music therapy‐related credentials. Half of the reported music therapy services were provided at private centers, followed by at social welfare centers (21.7%) and through home visits by service providers (21.7%). Among the respondents, 95.7% worked as part‐timers. When the participants were asked to evaluate a professional satisfaction, they rated the highest scores on session organization type (i.e., 40 minutes of intervention and 10 minutes of parent-therapist conference), while they rated the lowest scores on fee rates. The respondent reported that fee rates of music therapy voucher programs were lower than those of music therapy non‐voucher programs. In regard to recommendations for better service provision, the most respondent (N = 23) pointed that low fee rates should be first addressed. The second highest recommendation (N = 22) was that professional supervision should be provided. The results from this study indicate the need for standardized criteria for qualifications and credentials for music therapists. The organization of system to monitor work environment of music therapists and the quality of music therapy services would also be suggested for provision of better music therapy services as voucher programs.
