Since its introduction in the early 1990s as a professional field of scholarship, performing art therapy has gained nationwide attention both in the Korean press and in the medical field. Performing art therapy is also becoming more popular as a professional career. Consequently, this effect is promoting the growth of related training institutions. In contrast, social understanding of performing art therapy is not keeping pace with this rate of growth. Without proper social recognition, the field of performing art therapy cannot stabilize and will be limited in growth. In addition, without official formal recognition of performing art therapists' qualifications, Korea will be faced with the problem of having under-qualified therapists. Considering some of these potential difficulties, Performing art therapy in Korea is currently in the middle of a trial and error process to becoming a social establishment. This paper will focus on possible solutions to these problems as outlined above with an emphasis on theater, fine arts, music, and dance therapies. First, this article will theoretically consider the development, background, and definition of therapeutic methods. This will be followed by a study of training institution's curriculum, in order to obtain better understanding of the field, and also interviews of current therapists. According to research, performing art therapy in Korea can be categorized as having four main difficulties. The first challenge arises in the qualifications of therapists. Many have not been formally trained under government-approved programs and they lack the necessary professional skills. In practice, their treatment is improper, creating further problems. The second issue lies in the social status of performing art therapists. In Korea, therapists are licensed by training institutions and these institutions issue an excessive number of certifications solely for income. As a result, these under-qualified therapists are not secured under any protection by law because their licenses are not official. The third problem is that performing art therapy is not well recognized by the general public in Korea. Even those familiar with performing art therapy do not rely on it because they do not acknowledge its validity. The fourth challenge comes with the compatibility of performing art therapy to Korean culture. Performing art therapy originated from the United States and Europe, and some western therapeutic methods are not culturally compatible, requiring improvement in areas of difference. It is evident that performing art therapy in Korea still faces many problems as it is still in a developmental phase. If these problems can be resolved, performing art therapy can be firmly established in Korean society as a professional therapy field.
