(The) aspects and features of evil in the 19th century English and American novels : focusing on Wuthering heights and The scarlet letter원문보기

This dissertation highlights the fact that human beings can have a disposition towards one trait over another within a human duality: good and evil. The disposition towards good or evil can be related to elements outside of the person. The idea is that the formation of evil can be influenced by environmental factors, both social and economic, to make humans demons. This dissertation also surveys the diverse aspects of evil revealed through various experiences in human lives. Since good and evil transcend time, the researcher intends to analyze two works with different time periods, Wuthering Heights and The Scarlet Letter, each of which strongly represent Romanticism. The two works have different backgrounds: Wuthering Heights reflects the strict moral norms of the 19th Century Victorian society, while The Scarlet Letter is about a 17th century puritan community based on Biblical law. Both works, however, were influenced by the literary flow of the Romantic and Gothic novels. In addition, they have similar male characters, Heathcliff and Chillingworth: both undergo transformations to become demons and reveal various human instincts. In these respects, the works are well suited to being compared as analytic materials. Some of the aspects of evil that humans experience are revenge and hatred, causing normal people to become demons. One can notice that the destructive process into which the representative demons, Heathcliff and Chillingworth, fall is basically due to their lovers’ betrayal based on free will. However, the outer elements influencing the drive towards evil can not be excluded. If the environments surrounding these demons are considered factors causing their transformations, the internal influence of humanity within them can be seen as well as the external factors. Noticing the dual aspects of these characters allows one a new prospective, enabling one to view them with sympathy and recognize them as sacrifices. Socio-economic factors place Heathcliff in an inferior position that makes him unable to possess Catherine. These critical factors drive him to revenge. Similarly, Chillingworth holds malice toward the unknown adulterer because of Hester’s adultery. But it’s difficult to exclude the social condition of Chillingworth as a member of a puritan community. He falls into a dilemma as a puritan because in this period puritan commandments are the index of life and regulate people as an ideology. As hatred results in hatred and revenge in revenge, Heathcliff and Chillingworth’s revenge and hatred reach the stage of threatening and inflicting anguish on others. This in turn destroys their reality and yields the negative transformation of ‘Self-metamorphosis’ which has a mechanical disposition. This mechanical disposition can be called ‘The Mechanism of revenge’ because the revenger’s rage and hatred have influence on revenge, like the mechanical principle of action, as well as on the revenger himself as reaction. It is quite difficult to dichotomize good and evil, because humane qualities can still be found in demons and demonic features in those with kind appearances. Accordingly this dissertation also analyses human duality by using the term of Art, ‘Chiaroscuro’ describing things differently according to light and dark. The relationship between revenge and hatred springs from human relationships. Main male characters’ revenge is closely related to females’ desire. The women face a dilemma whether to defy social norms to satisfy themselves or, given how difficult it is for the female characters to avoid the frame of social restraint, to give up their desire. Sexual deviancy caused by females threatens the social order of contemporary marriage and womanhood. Though desire itself is not basically considered evil and is not always related to evil, it can develop to having the features of evil, because it functions as the drive of evil deeds. Desire gives birth to two kinds of worlds. The lovers in Wuthering Heights are likened to wild nature and savagery: the world is like Dionysian demolition in that the lovers are far from being restricted by social norms. On the other hand, the lovers in The Scarlet Letter are closely related to silence and concealment, standing in the world of silent desire through which Hester can stay around Dimmesdale. The world of these lovers is classified as artificial paradise. Aspects of evil appear in various human relationships, but some can be faced with unexplainable evil with human free-will, which is called the cosmic feature of evil. Because the aspects of evil can be found in both freely-willed and unwilled behaviors, it's also quite difficult to find a solution to overcome evil. Human beings coexist with evil and evil also get dual-aspect in appearance because of duality of human disposition as if evil were one covered the light of good.
