Material flow analysis (MFA) is a systematic assessment of the flows and stocks of material within a system defined in space and time. In this tool, target material can be analyzed through material life cycle and its quantitative results can be applied to other variety researches. In this dissertation, it is analyzed that there are material flow for wood and wood products, carbon stocks in HWP (Harvested Wood Products) and CO2 emission related to activity for production of wood product. Material Flow Analysis for wood and wood products MFA for wood and wood products focus on solid wood MFA is conducted for solid woods such as sawnwood and panel etc,. Each flows and processes in life cycle of wood that are classified into ‘Material’, ‘Manufacture’, ‘Industry’, ‘Recycle’, and ‘Disposal’ are calculated based on variety information like static data, documents and experts interview. Especially, dynamic model is used for estimation of stocks and out of stocks in ‘industry’ stage. Through this calculation model, future volume of target material can be estimated. As compared with 1980, DMI(Direct Material Input) is 18,790 ktons increased 2 times more. 16,080 ktons(DMO ; Domestic Material Output) in the same year is emitted in the defined system. The stocks of wood during 1980 to 2007, in construction, household and packaging industry, approximately 52,690 ktons have been accumulated within the system. As compared with 2007, the input volume in 2020 increased 22%, 26,520 ktons, output volume(including recycling and disposal volume) increased 28%, 24,450 ktons, and stocks are expected to increase 61% more, 84,760 ktons. MFA for wood and wood products focus on fibre wood(paper) As the same way with solid wood, the material flow of paper was to set up and quantified in the 2007. Pulp and waste paper are used as raw material for paper production. However volume information for these raw materials is being treated as confidential information in paper companies. Because it is difficult to collect the information, to solve these constraints the entire paper material flows are modeled by using some parameters such as paper production yield and component ratio of papers. Through the modeling of paper flows, effort and time spent on data collection can be reduced, which allows for continuous material flow can be updated. As compared with 1980, DMI is 7,390 ktons increased 5 times more. 7,190 ktons (DMO) in the year is emitted the system. The stocks of paper during 1980 to 2007, in publication industry, approximately 4,890 ktons have been accumulated within the system. As compared with 2007, the input volume of 'Industry' in the future in 2020 increased 24%, 1,261 ktons, output volume increased 25%, 12,460 ktons, and stocks are expected to increase 40% more, 6,850 ktons. Carbon Accounting of Wood Products Annual carbon exchange in wood products is calculated, as followed by three kinds of IPCC guideline approach. (SCA ;Stock Change Approach, PA ; Production Approach, AFA ; Atmospheric Flow Approach) To minimize Tier 1(using FAO data) and Tier 2(using country data) are just estimated the carbon volume using formulated procedure and assumption rather than identify the wood material flow across the entire life cycle. Tier 3(using country specific method) is a unique method of carbon accounts in a manner calculated to reflect the overall material flow. However the reliability of the information generated by its method may be reduced. In the case of tier 3, carbon change and CO2 emission is -1,077 ktonC in SCA, -181 ktonC in PA and 12,925 kton CO2 in AFA. CO2 emissions of Wood and Wood Products CO2 emissions associated with wood and Wood Products are analyzed for CO2 of decay and combustion during wood life cycle, and CO2 of used fossil fuel in the production of wood products. 6,760 ktons of CO2 emission from decay and combustion of wood, and 5,060 ktons of CO2 emission from fossil fuel have been calculated. Application Material management indicators Material management indicators using quantitative information associated with MFA can be used to diagnose the status of target material usage, to determine the effectiveness of policies and set target value for improvement. In this dissertation, resource productivity, resource specific impact and eco-efficiency are analyzed. In addition, various indicators depending on the resource, waste and environmental policies can be made and calculated. Resource productivity of wood in 2007, is kept at 0.4 thousand $/ton(1,000,000₩ = 1,000$). Resource specific impact, 0.25~0.30 CO2 ton/ton, has been slightly reduced since 1998. Finally, eco-efficiency that is estimated at 1.40 thousand $/ CO2 ton has been steadily increased since 1998. An Analysis on the Carbon Economic Effects of Using Wood Residues as Energy and Material In analyzing the economic effects of energy use, wood pellets were examined in their role as boiler fuel, to gauge their benefits based on reduced CO2 emissions and the price of CO2. In the case of material use, the ensuing economic effects were analyzed in terms of the carbon retained in construction or household systems, and of interest rates based on the price of carbon. The results showed that the economic benefits per 1ton of wood residues was substantial, at US$33.39 for energy use, US$53.70(after 26 years)for material use in construction, and US$36.62(after 21 years) for material use in household goods. Also, the economic benefits of material use were found to become identical with those of energy use at 12 years in the case of construction use and at 15 years in the case of household use. If the life time of the wood product containing wood residues as material is extended, or if the value of carbon(interest rate) is set at a higher level, the carbon benefits of using wood residues would be increased, and the number of years it takes for material use to overtake energy use may be shortened.
