This work aims to develop high performance composite materials based on NafionTM as an ionomer for transducer applications. First, Nafion nanocomposite membranes with silica and layered silicate (montmorillonite; MMT) as the fillers were prepared. An organosilane (3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxy silane; 3-MPTMS) was grafted on the surface of silica and MMT, and the thiol groups on the fillers were sulfonated. The incorporation and modification of the fillers in Nafion matrix respectively and greatly altered the internal morphology of hydrophilic ion-rich and hydrophobic fluorocarbon regions, followed by changes in thermal and mechanical properties, and mass transport kinetics. The Nafion nanocomposite membranes were engaged as polyelectrolytes for the preparation of ionic polymer-metal composite (IPMC) actuator, and the actuation performance was analyzed. Among all samples, IPMCs based on the Nafion/HSO3-MMT membranes showed the highest actuation performance in terms of displacement, blocking force, and response rate. The best performance with the Nafion/HSO3-MMT membranes was due to the high capacitance and the hindrance in the back diffusion of water by the sulfonic acid groups on the MMT surface, and its hygroscopic nature and high aspect ratio. A polypyrrole (PPy)/α-alumina composite filler prepared via the in-situ polymerization of pyrrole on alumina particles was also incorporated into Nafion, and the resulting composite membrane was inserted in the IPMC architecture. IPMCs with the PPy/alumina composite filler exhibited a largely enhanced actuation performance in terms of bending displacement, response rate, and blocking force. Furthermore, even under a low applied potential of 1.5 V, a viable level of actuation performance could also be approached by IPMCs with the PPy/alumina composite filler. The high performance of the IPMCs with the PPy/alumina composite filler was attributed to the increase in ionic flux (Li+ ion) by the PPy’s redox reaction of high efficiency with an aid of the hygroscopic alumina, and the enhanced Young's modulus. Based on the above results, in the second work, IPMCs based on two types of triple-layered Nafion composite membranes were prepared via consecutive solution recasting. The triple-layered membranes are composed of one Nafion nanoblend layer containing an amphiphilic organic molecule (10-camphorsulfonic acid; CSA) in the middle section and two Nafion/modified inorganic composite layers containing the HSO3-MMT filler or the PPy-coated alumina filler in the outer sections. Compared with the single-layered composite counterparts, the bending rates and energy efficiencies were significantly higher, although the blocking forces were a bit lower. These remarkable improvements were attributed to more efficient transport of mobile lithium ions and water molecules through the middle layer and larger accumulation/retention of the mobile species in the outer layers of two types. In the third work, a novel IPMC employing electrode assemblies composed of an electrospun Nafion/MWNT layer and a gold layer, which assemblies lie on both sides of a commercial Nafion membrane with strong adhesion among them, was developed. The present IPMC actuator shows very quick and large bending motions. Surprisingly, the energy efficiency of strain was almost 8 times higher than that of a conventional Nafion-IPMC. Besides, the failure of metal electrode after actuation diminished with the introduction of the electrode assembly into the IPMC architecture. The striking features in performance were considered to be due to the efficient quantum chemical and double-layer electrostatic effects in a charge injection model, induced by the good dispersion of MWNTs through a typical electrospinning technique.
