Nanocomposite film of pullulan (PULL) tempo cellulose nanofibrils (TOCNs) and montmorillonite clay (MMT) was prepared using a solution casting method in aqueous solutions. An optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), biodegradation test, and mechanical measurement were performed in order to characterize the PULL /TOCNs/MMT film morphology and properties. XRD and FT-IR data demonstrated that a good interaction exists between the TOCNs and PULL as well as PULL and MMT. In addition, XRD data revealed that exfoliated MMT nanoplatelets can be distributed within the PULL/TOCNs/MMT film structure. According to TGA results, PULL/TOCNs/MMT composite film showed improved thermal stability than a neat PULL film. The study also proved that the incorporation of TOCNs and MMT results in an improvement in the tensile strength of the PULL matrix. Also, it is examined that the tested PULL/TOCNs/MMT composite film is highly biodegradable and biodegraded in compost soil within 18 days. Moreover, an assessment of the thermal degradation method of PULL nanocomposite film regarding weight change, and FTIR spectra variation was done. The surface properties of the PULL/TOCNs/MMT (0-5 wt. %) films were examined by contact angle measurements. The film’s light transmittance (T %) was estimated using a UV/vis spectroscopy. Also, the effect of TOCNs, and various MMT contents on moisture uptake properties of PULL/TOCNs/MMT composite films were evaluated. Moreover, in this study, pullulan (PULL) nanocomposite films containing tempo cellulose nanofibrils (TOCNs) and silver (Ag) were prepared successfully using a solution casting technique in aqueous solution. To study the film morphology and properties different characterization techniques were used including optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), tensile test. Besides, soil burial biodegradation test, short time thermal exposure test, contact angle, UV transmittance, moisture uptake experiments, and mechanical tests of films were accomplished to understand its application. FT-IR data determined that a good interaction occurred between the PULL and TOCNs as well as PULL and Ag. Furthermore, XRD results and optical microscopy images revealed the coexistence of Ag and PULL/TOCNs blend matrix as well as uniform distribution of Ag nanoparticles. According to DSC and TGA analysis, PULL/TOCNs/Ag composite film exhibits advanced thermal stability than only PULL film. Same findings are also found in case of short time thermal exposure test in an air oven. In addition, incorporation of TOCNs and Ag results in an enhancement in tensile strength of the PULL matrix. Moreover, it is examined that the tested PULL/TOCNs/Ag composite film is highly biodegradable and biodegraded in compost soil within 2 weeks. It was also observed that the Ag content could increase antibacterial activity of the composite film.
