This study aims to ascertain how much the contents of the new high school Mathematics Ⅱ text books based on the revised 7th national curriculum have been met the goal which the national Curriculum pursue as categorizing and analyzing the ways of introducing and describing the textbook problems utilized in real world in Differentiation chapter and to get implications for developing textbooks. Accordingly, the following research subjects were set.
1. The ways to introduce and describe the textbook problems utilized in real world in differentiation chapters of 'Mathematics Ⅱ' of the 7th revised national curriculum are analyzed.
2. The methods to improve ways to introduce and describe real-life problems are studied.
To find solutions of the subjects, the real-life problems in differentiation chapter of 11 high school mathematics textbooks were analyzed and the characteristics of each textbook are analyzed. In addition, in each phase of introduction, development and completion of the chapter the methods to introduce real-life problems are categorized and analyzed according to the contents.
Conclusions from this study are as follows.
First, the new 10 high school MathematicsⅡ textbooks based on the revised 7th national curriculum utilize real-life problems actively in each phase of introduction, development and completion, however, only a text book rarely use real-life problems. Some textbooks use the problems in the introduction phase to arouse interest from students and others use them in the completion phase in order to suggest how the contents are really utilized in real world.
Second, previous Mathematics II textbooks confined real-life problems to the 'Derivative advantage' but the new textbooks presents the problems to introduction of concepts and comprehension part. The material of real-life problems is not limited to the content of science and the maximum and minimum problems but is developed in various ares including the differentiation of various functions and economic, social, and historical issues.
Third, even though material of real-life problems has become varied and the quantity of those has been increased, more studies and researches should been carried out not only to increase the quantity and variety of the material but also to invent sufficient problems to help students form the concept in connection with educational purpose. Moreover, following study that find out whether the real-life problems actually are not perceived as simple applied questions just like those of past and whether students form positive attitudes toward mathematics owing to the lesson of real-life problems should be performed.
