Recently, the use of Elastomeric Rubber Foam as insulation material has been increased in the insulation market of Korea. Hence, construction designers and installation engineers need more studies on the comparative analyses of several performances for different insulation materials such as economic efficiency, energy savings, deterioration phenomena, fire risks and especially major 3 factors, thermal conductivity, water vapor permeability and flame resistance when they select the insulation materials.
Thus, this thesis performs the following studies for the ways to apply insulation materials more effectively by reviewing the institutional and technical aspects when the regulations for the use of insulation materials are adopted.
1. consideration for the characteristics and types of basic raw materials(NBR, EPDM) for Elastomeric flexible cellular insulation material, and the ways to inscribe and declare.
2. derivation of the problems in regulations and testing methods for the insulation materials used in Korea
3. comparisons and verification for the performance of the major 3 factors of insulation materials, thermal conductivity, water vapor permeability, and flame resistance through the investigations on physical properties and the tests on thermal conductivity.
The conclusions through the research process of this study are as follows
1. We need to lower the thermal conductivity of the basic raw materials(NBR, EPDM) for elastomeric flexible cellular insulation in order to minimize the energy consumption when the insulation applied. This study investigates the base materials, and reveals that the NBR products are better for air conditioning works and more effective to prevent condensation, and the EPDM products perform more effectively against ozone and electricity due to its mixtures and natural physical properties.
2. By testing each sample pieces, the NBR products show the result of 0.033W/m.K and the EPDM products mark 0.036W/m.K for its thermal conductivity performance indices, and the test result shows the EPDM products has about 8% higher in index than the NBR products. This tells the NBR products should be classified as the level ”GA(A)” established by Korea Energy Management corporation(KEMCO) construction design manual under the bulletin 2001-118 of the Ministry of Construction and Transportation and the EPDM products should be classified as the level “NA(B)”.
3. When the final products of NBR & EPDM were tested for the calculation of their amount of heat radiation, we found that the energy could be saved about 6% respectively on the different thickness products of 13mm, 19mm, and 25mm compared to the same products of EPDM material in the 1st dimension calculation method. The study also found that the results in the 1st dimension calculation were not altered much with the 3-dimension calculation methods.
On the major 3 factors, thermal conductivity, water vapor permeability and which affect the performances of insulation, the trade offs are not extra-ordinary, and it is natural for one factor to have higher performance so that the performance of the other factors should be lowered. Therefore, the issues such as the regulations for the Elastomeric flexible cellular Insulation, general standards for installation and special installation manual, technical terminologies, definitions and also sustainability of thermal insulation, flame resistibility, should be studied more in the future researches.
key words: deterioration phenomena, sustainability of thermal insulation(water vapor permeability), fire risks(flame resistance), NBR, EPDM, closed cell, semi-closed cell, open cell
