Most of sea bottom sediment dredging has been traditionally maintenance dredging for easy passage of ships or base dredging for the safety of the foundation of civil engineering structures. Recently, however, there is the opinion in Korea and other countries that sea bottom sediment should be managed in the environmental aspect. Such opinions are based on the well‐known fact that nutrients and heavy metals contained in sediment cause eutrophication and degenerate water quality, and sediment contaminated with harmful substances has adverse effects on aquatic organisms and people’s health through direct and indirect exposure routes.
At present, guidelines for surveys of sea bottom sediment and domestic research on the management methods of polluted deposit soil are mostly focused on some specific items or viewpoints, and no integrated method has been suggested for the management of sea bottom sediment.
In case of marine water quality, a chemical indicator of marine environment, environmental standards for each item is suggested in the Framework Act on Environmental Policy, but sea bottom sediment has not been even researched and most of related studies are about sediment in lakes, marshes and rivers.
According to data on domestic sea bottom sediment removal works, the volume of dredging made in Korea during the period from 1998 to 2005 was 154,226,147㎥. By area, it was largest as 43,459639㎥ in Busan, which was followed by Gwangyang, Incheon, Pyeongtaek, and Gunsan. The area of dredging was largest in Gwangyang.
In the current situation that sea bottom sediment is being dredged for various purposes, the quality of marine environment is being deteriorated and marine ecosystem is severely damaged by indiscreet dredging works.
Accordingly, in order to maintain and preserve not only living things inhabiting sediment but also aquatic ecosystem healthily, we need to regard sediment not simply as a pollution source of water quality but as an independent medium like water, air and soil, the quality of which should be maintained adequately. Furthermore, detailed discussions are required not only on the management methods of lakes, marshes and rivers on land but also on separate management methods of sea bottom sediment.
This study surveyed marine water quality and sea bottom sediment in order to examine marine environment in Gwangyang, Goseong, Pohang, and Yeosu on the southern coast of Korea, and collected and analyzed statistics on various point and non‐point pollution sources in the survey areas in order to identify the cause of marine pollution.
What is more, we reviewed sea bottom sediment management methods suggested in previous domestic and foreign studies, and proposed practical marine environment management methods based on sea bottom sediment survey methods, identified causes of pollution, and contaminated sediment management methods.
