Substantial research has been performed on water quality, including analysis of changes in water quality in domestic streams and reservoirs, and the causes thereof, as well as preparation of quality improvement measures. However, most research has focused on generation, treatment, and reduction of organic matter (BOD, COD), and nutrients (T-N, T-P), while almost completely ignoring changes in water temperature arising due to climate change and anthropogenic pollution. Both foreign climate change research organizations like the IPCC, as well as domestic institutions like the National Institute of Meteorological Research (NIMR) have forecast that the atmospheric temperature of the Korean Peninsula will rise. Accordingly, it is clear that water temperature, which is closely related to atmospheric temperature, will experience the same changes in the future, and that this change will have a strong impact on aquatic ecosystems and bodies of water. Accordingly, water temperature management, which has been highly inadequate up to the present, is now urgently needed to respond to future changes in water temperature and quality, to prevent disturbances to the ecosystem, and to ensure aquatic ecosystem health.
This study analyzes temporal and spatial trends for water temperature and water quality in the streams and reservoirs of the 4 Major Rivers. Case study regions were then designated that could represent the trends in water temperature, and the main factors that influence water temperature trends were determined based on analysis of causes that induce changes in temperature. By evaluating the causes, this study was able to suggest new directions for water management that can reflect water temperature changes, which had previously been ignored.
Spatial and temporal characteristics for water temperature and other water quality parameters were analyzed using the Season-Kendall test by applying the water quality measurement network for 884 streams and reservoirs from 1989 to 2009. The study found that 29.0%(256) of 884 observation stations in the network had a statistically significant change in water temperature, and stations with increased temperatures outnumbered stations with decreased temperatures by 1.7 times. The Nakdong River showed the highest statistically significant temperature ratio trend at 78.7%, followed by the Han River at 71.4%, the Yeongsan/Sumjin River at 44.8%, and the Geum River at 38.5%. The ratio of stations with decreases, however, was the direct opposite. When comparing streams with reservoirs, the water temperature of streams was found to be more sensitive overall, with many stations showing the same trend towards increases for both streams and reservoirs.
Aside from temperature, BOD, SS, NO3-N, TP, PO4-P, and Total coliform bacteras showed a stronger decreasing trend. On the other hand, 7parameters(including temperatre) showd an increasing trend, in the following order, “pH > EC > DO > COD > TN > Chl-a > water temperature”. This demonstrated a clear increasing trend in parameters that had previously been excluded from the “water quality management” parameters. The results clearly indicated that all seven parameters were affected by air temperature and that there were close correlations between water temperature and the other six parameters.
The results of correlation analysis between water temperature and water quality parameters, showed strong negative correlation with DO; however, the increase in water temperature in actual streams and reservoirs was found to have had a continuous effect on the increase of Chl-a, pH, DO, and internally-generated organic matter, as well as a decrease in nutrient matter.
Analysis of meteorological data indicated a strong upward trend in temperatures at the majority of Meteorological Observation Stations. Furthermore, through regression analysis, it was found that an air temperature increase of 1°C cause an average water temperature increase of 0.61~0.84°C. Streams were found to be more sensitive than reservoirs in their degree of temperature increase.
To better apprehend the nature of water temperature changes, and to determine the causative factors for water temperature change, Anseongcheon, Wicheon, Dongjin River watershed (stream basin sites), and Dalcheon, Andong Dam, and the Yeongsan River Upstream watershed (mixed stream and reservoir basins) were selected as case study areas.
Results indicated that the main causative factors for water temperature change were anthropogenic factors like the rate of urbanization and pollution sources (i.e. sewage, wastewater etc.) in Anseongcheon. In the case of Wicheon, the effects of meteorological factors were the most significant cause for rises in water temperature. However, as the Dongjin River is a mixed rural/urban area, there was no statistically significant water temperature increase, as there was no clear causative factor.
The mixed site Dalcheon showed an upward trend overall, while Andong Dam showed no statistical trend, and the Yeongsan River Upstream showed a downward trend. All three mixed sites did not show common variability induced by external factors (i.e. anthropogenic and meteorological factors), while water temperature trends for dams determine trends downstream because the temperature changes showed high fluctuations downstream of the dam. For streams, however, as no such phenomena exist, external factors consistently provide the most influence. Therefore, it can be concluded that anthropogenic influences and facilities such as dams have higher impact on water temperature changes than the effects of climate in the case of Korea.
However, meteorological changes were found to show massive peaks and valleys from 2000, and with continuous management of anthropogenic pollution sources from now on, one can increasingly conclude that water temperature changes are primarily due to climate change. Accordingly, water temperature is a highly significant and representative management parameter that represents not only future climate change, but also changes in aquatic ecosystems. As such, Korea will need to better manage its water temperature issues by securing more and better water temperature data within the national water quality monitoring system (which is currently focused on water quality and ecosystems), while revising water quality management standards to enable a proper role for water temperature as a monitoring parameter in evaluating climate change and ecosystem health. Existing systems and existing policy on management of the water environment, which has neglected the significance of water temperature, should thus be modified
