The purpose of this study is to research the wanderings of the protagonist, Holden Caulfield in J. D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye(1951) who experiences as an adolescent and show how he solves his problems. Some critics have regarded this novel as a social story, defining the protagonist of this novel as the American Adam. In my opinion, however, this novel is an adolescent literature in which a suffering teenager in a special period in life explores his own identity through the three-day odyssey. In this novel, Holden is described just as an immature teenager who goes through a growth process of a general juvenile, not that of the American Adam.
The dissertation has 4 chapters. The first chapter contains two aspects of reason why The Catcher in the Rye among the young generation has long gotten attention and my opinion about the reasons. The second chapter is about the characteristic of adolescence and the notions of adolescent literature. The third chapter analyzes Holden's wandering by dividing it into a personal and a social aspect in detail, presenting what attitude toward life he could gain at the end of his three-day wanderings. In the fourth chapter, finally, I conclude my thesis, trying to interpret Salinger's message to the adult.
The Catcher in the Rye not only made a commercial success but also was adopted as a college and high school text. There were some people, however, criticizing this novel simply because of Holden's frequent use of crude words and coarse language. Yet that criticism reflects inversely how deeply Salinger understood the adolescent world. Even some critics who are against Salinger admitted that he employed accurately authentic teenage speech, and he knew how to describe young people. The authenticity of the book's language makes the adolescent world more realistic. Thanks to the realism, most of the young people are likely to sympathize with the suffering adolescent who has difficulty adapting himself to the outside circumstances. In addition, the vivid description of the psychology of a distressed teenager in the novel helps us understand better about what an adolescent is.
The protagonist, sixteen year old Holden Caulfield, of this novel is a teenager who is challenging and hates the phony world. He struggles to protect the world that is honest, sincere, and simple from the world full of phoniness, pretence, and social compromise. Hoping the innocence of childhood is eternal, he resists entering a sordid world of adult phoniness. However, he finds out that the world of experience is the one which he sooner or later should cope with in the painful but inevitable process of growing and aging.
