(The Adventure of Tom Sawyer),『미시시피에서의 생활』(Life on the Mississippi), 그리고『허클 베리핀의 모험』(The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn)

ABSTRACT
A Study of the Moral Growth and Freedom of Huck in the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
Mark Twain let a naive boy Huckleberry Finn appear in his novel, who led his own life in the mother nature, getting out of the civilized framework of society full of discrimination, hypocrisy, and falsehood. By doing so, as a work that enables the children to have the adventure and dream constantly toward the nature and the old generation to think over truth in life, he shows the pioneer spirits in the novel through which the brand-new sentence lines can be sensed in a colloquial manner. A series of events that the hero Huck goes through takes the shape just like a necklace in a single string, along the Mississippi River symbolic of freedom and nature. Huck shows up in the form of ‘American Adam' who looks for a new place where there is the freedom, appearing as liberalistic being with a view to realization of the ideal for Americans.
This literary work is often simply treated as juvenile literature. However, in fact, the introspection is keenly reflected inside by the author regarding the social and moral criticism against American cultures and the American dream during the 19th century. In other words, such phenomena as snobbism, adoration of Europe, moral corruption and the like amid the Americans in those days are satirized in the eyes of a child in 'Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.' Therefore, this literature can be seen as a novel of social criticism in the form of juvenile novel.
Mark Twain recognized the problems prevailed in society, feeling the hope, fear, and unrest in the 19th century of America himself. On top of this, he was also the writer who never gave up an upbeat prospect that the then society was looking forward to. Accordingly, his duplicity is characterized not only as comprehensive of all values that are incompatible among them but also as social critic and artistic imaginary resource from which the intrinsic nature of matter can be understood. The duplicity that he has from this perspective can be considered as essence in terms of both artistic feature and social critic feature.
This paper would analyze how the spirits of freedom longing for liberty and the spirits of resistance for freedom are embodied in the work through Huck in 'Adventures of Huckleberry Finn', and thus would look into what type of moral progress was obtained in him.
