The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of interactive sports video games, especially the Wii Sports Tennis, on students with disabilities using an action research approach.
The research questions were posed as below:
1. Can interactive video games get disabled students engaged regardless of their levels of ability or motivation?
2. What types of learning will take place while disabled students play interactive video games?
3. Can interactive video games be utilized in teaching sports to disabled students?
4. Do interactive video games have a potential as a leisure activity of disabled students?
5. Can interactive video games help promote integrated education?
Study participants were seven 6th grade students from the same classroom of H School for mentally disabled students located in A city, Kyunggi Province. A total of 16 intervention sessions were held throughout the study.
Since general data collection was limited by the participants' inability to complete forms for session evaluation, self-evaluation and peer-evaluation, and to answer in in-depth interviews, a web camera and a video camera were used to videotape the whole sessions. Observation and reflection logs were also kept for more reliable data collection. All the moving images captured by the web and the video cameras were systematically transcribed and cross reviewed to identify any significant meanings or intentions and create themes.
To secure the validity of this study, triangulation method was used and several acquaintances in the same field were interviewed for advisory comments. The interviewees included a professor of Special Physical Education Dept. at Korea National Sports University, three teacher colleagues with doctorate degrees in special education who showed interests in this qualitative study, one Physical Education teacher and one classroom assistant who served as a research assistant, and an educational researcher who worked as a management staff for the national e-sports game.
The study came to the following conclusions: firstly, most of the participants were fully engaged in the Wii Sports Tennis despite the fact that they showed different levels of ability and motivation : secondly, this study demonstrated the potential of interactive video sports games to be utilized in teaching sports to mentally disabled students as the participants perspired, became thirsty and exhausted during the game, learned the game rules, and improved their hit rates : thirdly, since interactive video games are fun and highly motivating and the remote control is easy to learn and highly transferable, they can serve as a way of enjoying leisure time : finally, interactive video games can help promote integrated education in that they are the common interests of both able-bodied and disabled students, which can help break down barriers and create a social bond without being self-conscious about their disability.
