Recently, as the workable land in urban areas is decreasing, infrastructures such as road and rail facilities and so on, have a tendency to construct in the underground space and as a building size becomes large, a large size of excavation increases. In the consideration of South Korea's geological character, the excavation site with the depth of more than 20 meters is usually accompanied by a rock stratum. Up to this date, the research of earth pressure and displacement on a excavation wall has been actively carried out and various theoretical and empirical methods have been proposed and used in practice. The research of earth pressure on the excavation wall in a jointed rockmass is relatively scarce. Accordingly, the earth pressure suggested by Peck(1969), which was developed from soil ground, is still widely used even in a rock stratum for the design of excavation wall. The earth pressure by Peck could not consider the joint angle, joint spacing and other joint properties existed in the rock and therefore, the Peck's earth pressure could not reliably reflect the earth pressure in a jointed rockmass. Accordingly, in this study, numerical parametric studies have been performed to investigate the earth pressure developed in a jointed rockmass with the consideration of various joint characteristics and the results have been compared with the empirical earth pressure suggested by Peck. The results clearly indicated that the magnitude and distribution of earth pressure have great differences between the empirical earth pressure by Peck and the earth pressure developed in a jointed rockmass. As the results of this study, it has been found that the joint characteristics are important factors that affect the earth pressure developed on the excavation wall in a jointed rockmass and the effect should be considered for the design process of excavation wall in a jointed rockmass.
