The purpose of this study is to find 'which experience' the neglected children have in the process of sand play therapy and what the 'essence' in its experience is, and is to examine a change in the process of sand play therapy, through a qualitative research on experience of sand play therapy for the neglected children in low-income brackets. The research subjects were set for 4 girl children in the 4th-6th grade of elementary school who attend after-school classroom in the evening for community welfare center. All of these children are those who have experience of physical negligence and who are experiencing emotional negligence now. The data collection was performed from January 2010 to March 2010.
According to children, the sand play therapy was carried out for 15 sessions twice a week with 40-50 minutes per 1 session. In addition to this, there was more meeting by once before and after. In the analytical process, the materials were included such as the recording contents, sand box photo, and therapy diary in the whole sessions.
A research method was applied Giorgi's phenomenological method. For this, all of materials were collected. And then, the findings were elicited according to Giorgi's phenomenological analytical procedure in 4 stages of ‘recognizing the whole, dividing semantic unit, change into psychological expression, and structural decision by integration and re-constitution.’ As a result, 11 sub-components were found on experience of sand play therapy for the neglected children in low-income
brackets. Through process of grouping this, 4 components were elicited dubbed 1) ‘contact: sand play is begun while unconsciousness is touched,’ 2) ‘acceptance: I am literally expressed and accepted’, 3) ‘expression: emotion, which was suppressed inside, is expressed safely,’ 4) ‘growth: standing on another starting point.’ Also, as a result of examining a change in theme of contents, space, and movement in sand box in the process of sand play therapy, and a change in children's ego-development stage, there was a change in which the major symbol grows, and the power gets stronger, is integrated and filled in the sand box.
There was a change of being more expanded and pointing to the center in the use of space.
The movement in the sand box could be found a change in becoming more positive, being produced directivity, and being taken out what is buried. Children's ego-development stage showed the process of being changed into ‘stage of struggle’ and then into ‘stage of adjustment and integration into daily life’ after passing through ‘stage of animals·plants.’ Along with this, children's ego-development stage could be known to show the circulatory process, not a straight line.
