The purpose of this study is to describe and understand the counseling process of recovering self-esteem of a victimized woman from family violence. The study focused on three research questions: 1) How is the recovering process of self-esteem manifested?; 2) What are the dynamics between the counselor and the counselee in the counseling process?; 3) How can the counselee be helped from the perspectives of pastoral counseling? In order to demonstrate the process of recovering self-respect from the viewpoints of family violence and pastoral counseling, this study utilized a case study method so that it could describe, evaluate, and analyse the long-term counseling process in-depth. The subject of the study was a married woman in her late thirties with her husband, a daughter, and a son. Although her husband appeared to get along well with other people, he was authoritarian, threatening, and assaulting the counselee for the past 12 years. The counseling process was aimed for recovering her self-esteem. From November 2006 to November 2007, depending on the speed of her recovery and changes, counseling sessions were provided once every week, which came to the total 44 sessions. Each session was recorded with tape-recorderd and monitored by a supervisor. In other words, the counselor became a pastoral counselor to function as spiritual oxygen for the counselee. The results of the study were as follows: First of all, although the counselee was originally in the state of self-abuse and impulsive thoughts and behaviors caused by her splitting ego, she slowly became to move into the state of patience and self-acceptance. Her initial sessions consisted of strong blames and attacks against other people around her. Her separation anxiety caused her inner states to great confusion being filled with feelings such as frustration, deprivation, hatred, and revenge. Her anger and fear were strongly attached with her sense of abandonment. During the counseling process, however, she began to recover her identity and esteem and showed some changes in understanding herself and other people. She also showed slow changes in expressing her own thoughts and emotions. Her poor self-esteem was found to be the result of internalizing her past experiences of violence and maltreatment. Second, the counselee and her husband were found to have managed codependency relationships. She gradually stopped expressing criticism and hatred, but tried to secure her own identity and independence. As the counseling process reached to its middle stage with a sense of rapport with the counselor, the counselee started to reveal her inner conflicts and inferiority feeling. She was able to dissociate her earlier problems, emotions and events. Instead of being overwhelmed, she was able to see her internal problems as an observer and to confront them with her integrated thoughts. Third, the counselee was initially obsessed with egocentrism and perfectionism, but later admitted her limitations and attempted more assertive relationships with others in her life. In addition, she began to experience positive relations with her own family members. Fourth, the counselee was repeatedly observed to rely on her husband and yet simultaneously to torment herself with the sense of hatred and criticism. It was found that the long-term, persistent counseling process helped her establish healthy esteem of her own. Fifth, in the past, guilty feelings made the counselee go to church, but later she could enjoy more voluntary and happy life after encountering a few good encounters with church members. The image of God has been changed from judgmental and fearful images to the parental images of forgiveness, acceptance, and unconditional love. Additionally, when the counselee made good therapeutic alliances with the counselor, she was able to overcome injustice and violence through the continuing help of the Holy Spirit in the counseling process.
