Wastewater treatment is the process of taking wastewater and making it suitable for discharging back into the environment. It is an important initiative which has to be taken more seriously for the betterment of the society and our future. The wastewater treatment methods are of three types i.e. physical, chemical and biological.
Physical treatment is very common method where sedimentation, coarse screening, aeration and filtration is done to remove the physically from wastewater. The most common method to treat water using chemicals is chlorination, ozonation and neutralization. The best example is the use of carbon, which adsorbs contaminants to clean the water.
Similarly, in biological treatment process, micro-organisms such as bacteria are used to biochemically decompose the wastewater and stabilize the end product. This method is further divided into aerobic and anaerobic system. Use of macrophytes to treat wastewater is also categorized in this method. The construction of artificial wetlands for the treatment of wastewater is increasing rapidly. This new approach is based on natural processes for the removal of different aquatic macrophytes such as floating, submerged and emergent.
Macrophytes are assumed to be the main biological components of wetlands. It take up large amounts of inorganic nutrients (especially N and P) and heavy metals (such as Cd, Cu, Hg and Zn) as a consequence of the growth requirements and decrease the concentration of algal cells through the light shading by the leaf canopy, and possibly, adherence to gelatinous biomass which grows on the roots.
This study investigates the effectiveness of the university wastewater treatment and the suitability of four floating aquatic macrophytes such as Spirodela polyrhiza, Pistia stratoites, Hydrocharis dubia and Salvinia sp on the chamber system in the laboratory. The role of these plants in removing nutrients (N and P), ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), chemical oxygen demand (CODcr), dissolve oxygen (DO) and water pH was tested in three different system of experiment i.e. monoculture system, mixedculture system and in polyculture system. In monoculture system maximum DO was observed for P. stratoites (50.11%) and minimum was observed for S. sp (42.70%). Polyculture showed the (50.57%) of DO removal. Similarly, removal of CODcr in monoculture was observed for P. stratoites (68.46%), in mixed culture (82.73%) and the highest was observed for polyculture systems (95.38%).
The nutrients, especially nitrogen and phosphorous which could be determined the water quality indicator. The highest total nitrogen removal in monoculture was observed for P. stratoites (86.47%), in mixed culture it was observed for the mixture of S. sp + P. stratoites (76.11 %). The highest removal of T- N was observed in polyculture systems (88.88%). Similarly, the highest removal of total phosphorous in monoculture was observed for P. stratoites (75.60%), in mixed culture it was observed for mixture of S. sp + P. stratoites (71.11%) and the maximum removal was observed for polyculture system (80.48%). Similar result was observed for ammonia removal. It was also concluded that plant system is significantly more effective to purify the wastewater as compared to the control system (no aquatic plant).
The removal of nitrate from synthetic medium was examined using two different aquatic plants i.e. H. dubia and S. sp. Among this two H. dubia reduced the nitrate level to 60.4% in a synthetic medium containing 100 mg/L. The efficiency of nitrate was further increased to 78.0% in 300 mg/L respectively. However, the tested plants in 400 mg/L could not survive after few days. That is why 300 mg/L concentration was considering optimum condition for these plants growth.
Our study also investigated the effectiveness of emergent plant i.e. Phragmities communis, Typha angustifolia, Zizania latifolia and Oenanthe javanica to treat the Sinjong lake water in Asan. These plants grown in four different wetland cells separated with each other. We determined the standing biomass and nutrient concentration of individual plants over the 5 month period from June 1 to October 15. Results indicated that total standing biomass was found higher for P. communis (4524 g/m2) followed by Z. latifolia (3699 g/m2) in September there after biomass was slightly decreased. Similarly, the total nitrogen concentration was found higher for P. communis (91 mgN/g) in July followed by Z. latifolia (87.5 mgN/g) in early growing period. In all the plant the highest nitrogen concentration was observed in leaf followed by root. The highest total phosphorous was observed for T. angustifolia (17.4 mgP/g) followed by Z. latifolia (12.8 mgP/g). Similarly, the highest phosphorous was observed in stem except for P. communis.
