Nitrogen oxides (NOx), a hazardous material that causes acid rain, are emitted from fixed sources like boiler, power generation equipments and incinerator and moving sources like car etc, causing photochemistry smog through reaction with hydrocarbon in air, and ultimately leading to global warming through reaction with ozone in stratosphere. In particular, acid rain, if dropped directly on plant leaves, causes physiological disorder and at times reduces lifespan. In addition, acid rain acidifies soil, and deteriorates soil environment by changing the solubility of inorganic nutrition of soil and instigating leaching. For such reason, NOx related environmental regulations are growing intensified day by day throughout the world. The techniques of the treatment of emission gas including such NOx include catalytic decomposition, selective catalyst reduction (SCR) method, selective non-catalytic reduction (SNCR) method, and absorption method etc. In this study, SCR method the process that demonstrates outstanding safety and the effect of reducing emission gas and suitable for large equipments was selected and used in the experiment. The subjects of SCR study mainly used include zeolite, noble metal supported catalyst and metal oxide supported catalyst. Zeolite catalyst has the advantage that it sticks to NO reducing agent better than dissolution agent, and noble metal catalyst is effective in NO reducing reaction by properly combining and utilizing the fact that it shows high activity in oxidizing NO to NO_(2). In this study, Au/Al_(2)O_(3), Pt/Al_(2)O_(3) or Au/SiO_(2), Pt/SiO_(2) on the 1st layer of monolith were double wash-coated, and then ZSM_(5), MCM-41, mordenite and ferrierite etc on the 2nd layer. And these catalysts for the reduction reaction of NOx with reductants (C_(3)H_(6), CH_(4) were investigated. The physical properties were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). SEM results indicated that the 1st layer is coated with noble metal immobilized catalyst and the 2nd layer with zeolite catalyst. In addition TEM results showed that gold particles were uniformly dispersive in 3 to 4 nm size and platinum particles in 5 nm size. It was shown that Au(5wt%)/Al_(2)O_(3) and Pt(1wt%)/Al_(2)O_(3) catalyst coated with NH_(4)-ZSM-5 on the 2nd layer has the highest efficiency of NOx removal with the effect of broadening temperature window. As for the effects of noble metal supported catalyst by the loading amount, optimum loading amount is 5wt% in case of gold and 1wt% in case of platinum. As a result of surveying the changes of the concentrations of NOx and C_(3)H_(6) by the reaction temperatures while changing the concentration of NOx, NOx reduction effects dropped as concentration increases, and the temperature that showed highest activity was 300℃ at all concentrations. As for the NOx removal efficiency by contact time, NOx reducing effect tended to increase in all temperature range with increase in contact time, and NOx reducing effect was most outstanding when W/F is 846 hr∙g-cat/mol. When aluminum and noble metal catalyst are loaded simultaneously, activity was less than when noble metal supported catalyst layer coated on the 1st layer of dual layer structure unlike in existing method. As a result of surveying the NOx removal effect of the catalyst produced with CH_(4) instead of C_(3)H_(6), removal efficiency was lower even if catalyst and reaction condition are the same. As a result of examining the mechanism of dual layer structure monolith catalyst, it was shown that if noble supported catalyst with outstanding NO oxidizing force is coated on the 1st layer and zeolite catalyst that can suck C_(3)H_(6) a reducing agent and serves as catalyst itself is coated on the 2nd layer of dual layer structure, dual layer structure catalyst that widens temperature window area and reduces reduction temperature for maximum activity by preventing abrupt oxidation of reducing agent can be produced.
