This paper offers a look at Gwonbeon (institutions of gisaeng or professional female entertainers) operating in the Seoul area in the 1910s during the Japanese colonial rule. As a cooperative system of gisaeng changed into the Gwonbeon system, gisaeng, who inherited traditional dance, were active at Hanseong Gwonbeon, Daejeong Gwonbeon, Hannam Gwonbeon, and Gyeonghwa Gwonbeon in the Seoul area. The study thus aims to identify gisaeng's artistic activities and their characteristics in these various Gwonbeon. Gwonbeon at that time served as a traditional music school, and taught gisaeng how to sing, to play instruments and to dance. Gwonbeon caused the most significant change in the artistic circles, and produced the largest number of famous traditional dancers. Thus, the aforementioned Gwonbeon were selected to be studied, and literature study was used as the methodology; literature included previous studies published in single volume books, journals, and collections of dissertations for master's degree and doctoral degree, as well as relevant articles in newspapers and magazines, and views from relevant organizations.
Other research materials included Joseon Miinbogam (A Handbook on Joseon's Beauty), and collections of literature compiled by Kim Yeong-hui. The result of examination is given below.
First, gisaeng accommodated in Gwonbeon in Seoul mostly ranged in age from 14 years to 23 years. Candidates initially learned how to sing, and then how to dance.
Second, according to the birthplaces, namely, regions, arts preferred by Gwonbeon varied. Daejeong Gwonbeon and Hannam Gwonbeon can be cited as such an example. Daejeong Gwonbeon had the largest number of gisaeng hailing from Pyeongyang at 97, and preferred Seodo folk songs, while Hannam Gwonbeon had the largest number of gisaeng hailing from Yeongnam, of whom gisaeng, talented in Namdo folk songs, formed the largest group.
Third, each Gwonbeon endeavored to inherit tradition in earnest, and artistic trends varied. They all performed geommu (sword dance), seungmu (monk dance), jeongjaemu dance, and chunaengmu dance. Hanseong Gwonbeon and Daejeong Gwonbeon performed Japanese dances such as naejimu, seoyangmudo, and sammiseon, while Hannam Gwonbeon and Gyeonghwa Gwonbeon did not perform these dances.
As such, gisaeng of Gwobeon inherited traditional arts, and led the development of recent modern popular culture. They should be recognized for inheriting and preserving the arts and musical culture of female entertainers of Daehan Empire's Imperial Household, and should be reevaluated as the inheritors of prototypes, accepters of traditional arts as modern arts and creators of arts.
